Canggu seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - June)

During the austral autumn, Canggu experiences its most consistent conditions. The southwest monsoon transition brings a perfect blend of powerful, long-period groundswells from the Southern Ocean and reliable offshore winds from the easterly quadrant. Average wave heights hover between 1.7m and 2.1m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, providing punchy, hollow waves at the many peaks. April sees the highest percentage of ideal wind (63%), while May and June offer a slight uptick in size. This is the sweet spot for quality surf sessions.

Fair Surf Season (March, October - November)

The shoulder months see a trade-off between swell size and wind consistency. March is a transition month where the northeast monsoon gives way to lighter, more variable winds, and swell from the SSW pumps at around 1.6m. October and November mark the return of the wet season, but the Indian Ocean still sends healthy SSW swell with solid periods (12-14s). Winds become more unpredictable, combining easterly trades and westerly onshores, but when the timing is right, you can score excellent waves with fewer crowds.

Low Surf Season (December - February, July - September)

Two distinct low seasons exist. December through February is dominated by the northwest monsoon, with persistent onshore winds from the west and north-west that ruin wave quality. Swell is still present (1.6-1.7m, 12s) but often lumpy and unruly. From July to September, the southeast trade winds blast across the island, clocking in from the ESE and SE at 20-40 kph. This creates strong cross-shore winds that make the waves choppy and difficult to surf, despite the largest swell of the year (averaging 2.0-2.2m with periods over 14s). Only the most protected breaks or early morning sessions can yield clean conditions during these months.
