Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of the Maldivian dry season delivers the finest combination of offshore winds and consistent, rideable swell to Castaways. During these months, the northeasterly monsoon establishes a firm grip across the archipelago, blowing steadily from the north through northeast quadrants. This creates near-ideal offshore conditions for the south-facing setup, grooming the swell into clean, peeling lines. Swell energy is predominantly from the south and southeast, generated by distant mid-latitude storms in the Southern Ocean and the persistent trade wind fetch in the Indian Ocean. Average wave heights hover in the 1.0-1.2m range with periods pushing 10-11 seconds, offering punchy, rippable waves that suit a wide range of surfers. The wind is ideal 58-70% of the time, making this the most reliable window for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (March & November)

During March and November, the monsoon transitions, bringing a mix of conditions. In March, the fair season lingers with 64% ideal wind, but the swell direction shifts more directly south and even SSW, which still works beautifully on the reef. The average period peaks at 11.3s, adding extra power. November, on the other hand, marks the onset of the west coast monsoon, with westerlies and southwesterlies becoming more common, but the remaining northerly flow still produces decent sessions. Swell heights are solid at 1.3m in March and 1.3-1.5m in November, though wind consistency drops to 35% ideal. These months offer good waves for the patient surfer willing to pick the windows when the trades align.

Low Surf Season (April - October)

The southwest monsoon dominates from April through October, ruining surf quality at Castaways. The prevailing winds shift to the west, southwest, and south, all of which blow directly onshore at this south-facing reef. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 13-20% for most of this period. While the swell is not lacking — average heights range from 1.3m in April to a peak of 1.7m in June through August — the combination of onshore wind and often raw, stormy swell makes for challenging, often messy conditions. The waves become chopped and bumpy, though occasional lulls in the monsoon can produce short-lived windows of clean surf, especially in the early morning before the sea breeze kicks in. September and October see a slight improvement as the trades start to shift, but overall, this is the time for storm-watching rather than consistently scoring.

October: Gritty Transition with Hope

October is a low-surf-quality month at Castaways, but it's also the last gasp of the monsoon before the dry season returns. Ideal wind percentage remains low at 20%. The wind pattern is a mix: still strong westerlies (W 23.7%, WSW 22.5%, WNW 13.4%, SW 12.4%) but also increasing NW (4.1%) and NNW (1.4%) flow. Onshore winds from the south are still present (S 2.9%, SSW 5.5%), but the percentages are declining. Swell averages 1.5m at 10.5s, with directions from S (32.0%), SSW (18.0%), SW (13.5%), and SSE (23.8%). A notable feature is a rise in the 1.5-2m range: 10.1% from S, 9.4% from SSW, 8.2% from SW, and 3.3% from WSW. These are larger, longer-period waves that start to have more power. The onshore wind still ruins many days, but as October progresses, the frequency of northerly wind events increases. For the bold traveler, the second half of October can offer the first real taste of the upcoming best season, with clean overhead waves on the right day.
