Best Surf Season (March – April & November)

The heart of the surf window at Chickens aligns with the transition between the winter and summer monsoons. From March through April, the trade wind regime weakens and the frequency of offshore flow from the north and northwest peaks near 60%, etching pristine, glassy conditions onto the wave face. Simultaneously, the swell direction pivots into the favored SE to S window, delivering fun, rippable lines in the 0.7–0.8m range with punchy 7–8s periods. November echoes this pattern as the northeast monsoon re-establishes, offering a second window of clean, offshore winds over 50% of the time and a solid mix of ESE to S swells. These are the months when Chickens truly lives up to its reputation as a reliable, user-friendly Maldives wave.

Fair Surf Season (January – February, September – October & December)

During these months, the spot sees a blend of manageable and marginal conditions. January and February are dominated by east-northeasterly swell (ENE at 50–70%) which, while not ideal, can still wrap in with enough size (0.9–1.1m) to provide rideable waves. The wind is offshore roughly 34–50% of the time, but often comes from the NE or ENE – cross-shore directions that can still leave a bit of texture on the face. September and October bring a return of larger, longer-period swell (1.0m / 7.6–8.4s) from the southern quadrants, but the wind is more variable, with offshore flow only about a third of the time. December offers a mixed bag: healthy ENE swell (41% of the total) and 42% offshore winds, but the swell direction is far from ideal. These months are more about picking the right day when the wind clock aligns and the swell direction trends south.

Low Surf Season (May – August)

The southwest monsoon wreaks havoc on Chickens from May through August. The wind shifts dominantly to the west and west-southwest, which for this south-southeast-facing reef translates into strong, lumpy onshore conditions (ideal wind < 30% of the time). Swell direction swings into the western quadrants – WSW, W, and even NW – delivering waves that are often choppy and disorganized. While the average height hovers around a decent 1.1–1.2m with periods of 7.5–8.9s, the combination of unfavorable swell angle and persistent onshore flow means the vast majority of days are blown out and mushy. Only rare windows of northwesterly wind or a south-southwesterly swell pulse can salvage a session. For the dedicated surfer, this is the time for a trip to the east side of the atoll or a vacation from the wave.

December: Building Eastern Swell

December sees the northeast monsoon fully in place. Offshore wind is 42%, with dominant winds from NE (20.1%), ENE (27.2%), and E (8.4%) – these are cross-shore directions that can still provide groomed surfaces when they are lighter. Swell direction is heavily ENE (41.4%) and E (23%), delivering an average height of 1.0m with a short 6.9s period. Waves are consistent but choppy due to the short period and less-than-ideal angle. On days with lighter winds from the north, the waves clean up to offer crisp, waist-high surf. December is a fair month – you’ll find waves every day, but not always quality.
