Best Surf Season (December - March)

The Northwest Monsoon roars to life from December through March, delivering the highest percentage of offshore winds from the N to NW quadrant. During these months, the Indian Ocean churns out consistent SSW and S groundswell with average wave heights of 1.4 meters and periods exceeding 12 seconds – providing powerful, clean, and rippable waves. This is the prime window for world-class surfing at Cimaja, with glassy mornings and groomed lines that keep you in the water all day.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

April and November act as transitional shoulders, where the wind patterns are shifting. In April the southeast trades start to build, dropping ideal wind to 35%, but the swell period peaks, offering long, powerful lines. November sees the trades relax and the northwest monsoon return, with ideal wind around 15% but increasing. Surf quality becomes more variable – expect clean dawn sessions mixed with afternoon onshore chop.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, the southeast trade winds dominate the region, blowing steadily from the E to SE and ruining wave quality. Despite the largest and most powerful swell of the year – average heights from 1.6 up to 2.0 meters and periods over 14 seconds – the wind rarely blows offshore, with ideal conditions dropping below 10% in the peak months of June through September. The ocean is pumping, but the surface is often bumpy and difficult. This season is for the dedicated few who can find the brief windows of clean offshore flow.

May: Bigger Swells, Tougher Conditions

May marks the onset of the true dry season swell in the Indian Ocean, with wave heights averaging 1.6 meters and a long 14-second period. The S and SSW swell windows deliver plenty of powerful, hollow sets. Unfortunately, the wind patterns shift decisively to the southeast, making for bumpy, onshore conditions over 75% of the time. Surf quality suffers unless you score a rare early-morning offshore breeze from the north. This month is for the die-hards who are willing to battle the chop for a glimpse of the underlying power.
