Best Surf Season (May - August)

The winter months are the heart of the swell window at Clubhouse, despite the fact that the predominant swell direction is from the SSW and SW - far from the optimal ENE to NNE angles. What makes this period stand out is the sheer power and consistency of Southern Ocean storms. Average wave heights climb to 2.3-2.4m (solid, rippable to pumping) and periods stretch to 12-12.5s, bringing long-period groundswell that wraps into the beach. More importantly, the frequency of offshore winds from the WSW and W increases, offering a higher chance of clean conditions. When the wind aligns and a rare east or north-east swell sneaks in, Clubhouse can turn on with punchy, hollow waves. Still, be prepared for plenty of days with onshore E/ENE winds that chop things up.

Fair Surf Season (September - November)

As winter transitions to spring, the swell energy begins to taper. Average heights dip from 2.3m in September to 2.1m in November, and periods shorten accordingly from 11.7s to 10.8s. The dominant swell remains from the SSW and SW quadrants, but the number of larger, more powerful events decreases. Offshore wind percentages hold steady around 22%, with the best windows coming from the W and WSW. This is a shoulder season where you can still score fun, clean waves if you time the weather windows, but the consistency drops. The chance of a true east swell event is low, so the default is usually a bumpy, wind-affected south swell.

Low Surf Season (December - April)

Summer in South Africa brings smaller, weaker swells and a higher proportion of onshore winds from the east and northeast - directly onshore at Clubhouse. Average wave heights range from 1.9m to 2.1m, but periods hover around 10.7-11.4s, producing less powerful, more wind-affected waves. The wind is ideal only 19-24% of the time, and when it is offshore, it often comes from the SW or WSW, which can slightly improve the shape but still struggles against the dominant south swell. Micro to fun-sized days dominate, and the surf is often messy. This period is best left for the occasional lucky strike when a rare east swell lines up with a light offshore - otherwise, plan for a grovel session.

May: Winter Swell Window Opens

May is where the winter season truly kicks in. Average swell height climbs to 2.2m and period to 12.2s - long-period and powerful. Swell from the SW jumps to 21.3% and SSW remains strong at 27.9%, while the S and SSE components diminish. This is classic Southern Ocean groundswell. The wind distribution becomes more favourable: offshore directions (WSW 17.9%, W 14.9%, WNW 6.9%) collectively account for a significant portion, and ideal wind reaches a yearly high of 27%. However, note that onshore NE (6.6%), E (4.9%), and ENE (8.7%) still occur. The increased westerly activity means more clean surf days, with waves often in the 1.5-2.5m range. Clubhouse starts to deliver proper winter waves, albeit not from the optimal direction.
