Best Surf Season (May - August)

As the Southern Hemisphere winter takes hold, the breathing of the planet shifts and the Indian Ocean begins to pulse with purpose. For Coffee Bay, this is prime time. The combination of long-period groundswells from the deep Southern Ocean and the increased frequency of offshore westerly winds creates the most consistent and high-quality surf of the year. Average wave heights sit in the 2.0-2.3m range, with periods stretching beyond 11 seconds — that's powerful, long-period energy that wraps beautifully around the headlands. The wind is ideal a solid 31-46% of the time, with clean westerly and northwesterly flows grooming the lines. This is when Coffee Bay earns its reputation as a world-class wave. Expect pumping, heavy sets and plenty of rippable walls.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The shoulder months bring a mix of everything. In April, the swell is still robust at 2.1m average and periods are long (10.7s), but the wind starts to swing more onshore from the northeast. Ideal wind sits at 26%, which means you need to pick your windows. September sees the transition back to spring: swell holds at 2.2m and periods remain decent at 10.6s, but the offshore breeze consistency drops to 22%. During these months, the magic often comes in short but sweet bursts when a high-pressure system stalls over the interior, delivering glassy mornings and groomed, punchy surf.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer brings the heat, and with it, the trade winds dominate. From October through March, the prevailing wind is from the northeast and east — directly onshore at Coffee Bay, ruining the wave quality. Average wave heights are still around 1.9-2.2m, but the periods shorten to 9.6-10.3s, producing more average, punchy and often choppy conditions. Ideal wind plummets to just 13-18%. The swell direction remains favorable (E through SSE), but the constant onshore flow makes it a struggle. That said, if a strong cold front pushes through and swings the wind to the west, you can score some fun to good waves before the trade winds reestablish. For the most part, though, it's a grovel or a waiting game.

May: Winter Swells Take Command

May is a turning point. The average swell height is 2.0m, but the period surges to 11.2s — a clear signal of the Southern Ocean's awakening. Swell direction shifts notably: S (19.9%) and SSW (17.0%) become the primary sources, with significant energy also from SSE (11.7%). The SSE to SSW range is ideal for Coffee Bay's ESE orientation, wrapping in with power. Wind conditions improve dramatically: NE winds drop to 16.3%, while the offshore quadrants strengthen — NW (6.1%), WNW (3.9%), W (5.0%), and NNW (5.8%) — contributing to an ideal wind score of 41%. The westerly winds become more frequent as cold fronts track across the region. This is when Coffee Bay starts to fire with consistency. Long-period groundswells meet offshores, producing pumping, heavy waves in the 1.5-2.5m range. May is the start of the best surf season.
