Best Surf Season (April & November)

The transition months between the two dominant monsoon regimes deliver the magic at Coke's. In April, the Northeast Monsoon begins to weaken, and the first pulses of Southern Hemisphere groundswell start to sneak into the Maldives. This is when we see a near-perfect blend: offshore winds from the north and northwest still blow with consistency (55% ideal frequency), while the swell direction rotates towards the south-southeast and south – exactly the windows Coke's craves. Swell heights average 0.8m with periods climbing to 8.2s, producing clean, rippable waves. Similarly, November marks the retreat of the Southwest Monsoon, as the wind pattern flips back to northerly quadrants. The wind is ideal 51% of the time, and the swell, still rich from the westerly belt, wraps into the bay with a solid SE to S direction. Periods around 7.4s and heights near 1m create fun, pounding surf. These months are the prime windows for scoring Coke's with both power and perfection.

Fair Surf Season (March, May, September, October)

These shoulder months offer a mixed bag – the potential for epic sessions is there, but consistency takes a hit. March boasts the highest offshore wind frequency of the year (62%), yet the swell is predominantly short-period and from the E to ESE, which doesn't quite align with Coke's optimal south-facing exposure. You'll get playful, groveling waves on smaller days, but the punch is missing. May sees the onset of the Southwest Monsoon, with wind ideal dropping to 28% as onshore westerlies take over. However, this is when long-period SSW and SW swell arrives, averaging 1.1m and 7.5s. The catch: onshore winds often chop up the surface. Still, a clean window during a brief wind shift can deliver fun-sized barrels. September and October sit in the tail end of the Southwest Monsoon. Wind remains predominantly from the west and southwest, but the frequency of ideal offshore winds hovers around 34-39%. The swell is consistent from the south and southwest, with heights around 1m and periods of 7.6-8.4s. These months are for the dedicated – you'll have to pick your sessions carefully, but when the trade winds relax and the swell lines up, Coke's comes alive with smooth, well-shaped waves.

Low Surf Season (June - August & December - February)

The peak of each monsoon brings challenging conditions for Coke's. During June through August, the Southwest Monsoon is in full swing. While the swell is at its most powerful – averaging 1.2m with periods up to 8.9s – it arrives from the SW to W, which is directly onshore for this south-southeast facing reef. The data shows ideal wind frequencies plummet to 22-39%, and the dominant wind direction is from the west, creating bumpy, wind-affected waves. Even when the size is there, the quality suffers. On the flip side, December through February marks the peak of the Northeast Monsoon. Offshore winds from the north and northeast blow strong (35-50% ideal), but the swell is dominated by a short-period, low-energy ENE and E component (average height 0.9-1.1m, period 6.7-6.9s). This direction is completely shadowed from the south-facing reef, resulting in weak, choppy surf. Occasional pulses from the north can offer a few rideable lines, but overall these months are the least consistent for quality waves at Coke's. If you're chasing swell, this is the time for a trip to the opposite side of the atoll.

June: Peak Monsoon – Big Swell, Onshore Wind

June sits squarely in the heart of the Southwest Monsoon. The wind is almost constantly onshore from the W and WSW, blowing 20-40+ kph, with ideal wind frequency dropping to a mere 22%. This is the worst month for wind at Coke's. Meanwhile, the swell is at its peak size: average 1.2m and period 8.2s. The swell directions are heavily weighted towards SW (22.5%), WSW (32%), and W (21.1%) – all of which are onshore for this SSE-facing reef. The result: powerful but messy surf. Wave heights often reach 1.5-2.5m from the WSW and W (15-20% of the time), but they arrive as wind-swell hybrids, lacking the clean, groomed lines Coke's is famous for. The period is decent (8.2s), but the surface texture will be bumpy. Only die-hards will find enjoyment on the rare occasions when a lull in the westerly flow allows the reef to groom the groundswell. Even then, the swell direction is less than ideal. June is a month for boat trips to more sheltered spots on the atoll.
