Best Surf Season (November - March)

The winter months unleash the full fury of the North Atlantic upon the Costa de la Luz. Powerful extratropical cyclones march eastward across the Atlantic, generating robust long-period swells that march straight into the WSW-facing shores of Conil. Average swell heights hover around the 1.4 to 1.5-metre mark, with periods routinely exceeding 10 seconds and often pushing into the 11-12 second range – bringing power and punch. The wind regime shifts in your favour too: offshore flow from the eastern quadrants (NNE through ENE) is most frequent during these months, with ideal wind percentages peaking at 36% in January. This is when Conil transforms into a consistent, high-quality wave magnet. The combination of solid groundswell and clean offshore breezes creates the region’s most reliable and rewarding surf. It’s no surprise that the big swells and smiling faces arrive alongside the winter storms.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

As the seasons transition, so does the surf. April and October serve as the shoulder months – a mix of leftover winter energy and early hints of the coming season. Swell heights drop slightly to an average of 1.1–1.2 metres, and wave periods settle around 9.4 seconds, producing average but rideable waves. The percentage of ideal wind dips to about 21-25%, meaning you’ll need to be selective and pick your windows. However, when a late-season low spins up or a strong Azores High sets up a favourable gradient, you can still score fun, rippable peaks with light offshore winds. These months are best for the dedicated surfer who doesn’t mind checking the charts daily and chasing the occasional gem.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer settles over southern Spain like a warm blanket, and the surf snoozes in response. The North Atlantic storm track retreats northward, leaving Conil with small, weak swell – averages of just 0.8–1.0 metres and periods as low as 6.8 seconds in July. The prevailing wind is dominated by the strong, dry Levante (east to southeast), which blows onshore and ruins wave quality. Ideal wind percentages drop to a meagre 15-18%. While the water is warm and the sun is relentless, the waves are mostly ankle-to-knee-high chop. Occasional weak groundswell from the W or WNW can sneak in, especially in May or early June, but don’t expect any epic sessions. This is the time for swimming, sunbathing, and planning your autumn return.

May: Fading Swells, Building Breezes

May sees the swell average drop to 1.0m and period to 8.2 seconds – now small to fun-sized territory. The WNW and W still dominate (totaling 67.2%), but the E swell (15.2%) becomes more noticeable, a sign of local windswell triggered by the strengthening Levante. The wind story is dominated by the E (21.7%) and ESE (11.1%), often blowing 20–40 kph, which creates messy, crisscross conditions. Ideal wind sits at just 18%. The best chance for a decent surf is early in the month before the wind machine fully turns on, or when a rare morning glass-off occurs. The water warms up, so a spring suit is fine, but manage expectations – it’s more of a grovel session month.
