Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life from October through March, delivering the most consistent and powerful swell to Contreiras. Average wave heights range from 2.0m in October to a peak of 2.6m in January, with periods routinely exceeding 12 seconds. This is driven by a climatological intensification of extratropical storms rolling off the continent, generating long-period NW to WNW groundswells that wrap perfectly into the beach's NE exposure. Offshore wind percentages hover around 17-22%, often associated with post-frontal high pressure or a favorable position of the Azores High, creating clean, groomed lines. This is when the break truly fires, offering punchy, rippable walls and occasional heavy, pumping sets.

Fair Surf Season (April, May & September)

During April, May, and September, the swell machine dials back but still delivers rideable waves. Average heights settle between 1.6m and 2.1m with periods averaging 10-11s. While the consistency of large, long-period swell diminishes, these months see a slightly higher frequency of light wind days and a better balance between NW and NNW swell components. The window for quality waves narrows, but when a solid WNW swell coincides with a light offshore breeze from the SW or W, Contreiras offers fun, groveling to solid surf—perfect for those wanting to avoid winter crowd.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings a significant lull to Contreiras as the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward. Average wave heights drop to just 1.4-1.5m with periods under 10s, mostly short-period windswell from the NW and NNW. The offshore wind window shrinks dramatically—especially in July, where only 4% of the time delivers ideal conditions. Prevailing NE trade winds (onshore) dominate, chopping up what little swell arrives. While the occasional longer-period groundswell from a distant storm can sneak in, generally the surf is small, weak, and wind-affected. This season is best left for rock fishing or planning a trip to the opposite hemisphere.

September: The Spark Returns

September breathes life back into Contreiras as the North Atlantic begins to stir. Average swell height rises to 1.6m with a period of 10.5s. The dominant swell direction is NNW (40.4%), but we see a healthy increase in NW (16.7%) and WNW (4.6%)—a sign of more organized groundswell. The wind also improves, with 18% of the time offering offshore conditions (best since March). Onshore NNE winds (28.7%) remain the most common, but westerly and southwesterly winds become more frequent. This month is a transitional gem: the water is still warm, the crowds are thinning, and the combination of longer-period WNW swells with light offshore winds can produce excellent waves. It's the beginning of the comeback.
