Best Surf Season (October - March)

Winter is when Costa Nova truly comes alive. The North Atlantic fires off a relentless succession of extratropical storms, generating consistent powerful, long-period groundswell that pounds this west-facing stretch of the Portuguese coast. Dominant swell directions from WNW, NW, and W funnel straight into the beach, producing average wave heights above 2m—often pushing into the 2-2.5m range. Combined with a favorable offshore wind window (ENE-E-ESE-SE), the ideal surf conditions peak between December and February, where the wind is offshore nearly 50% of the time. Expect pumping, heavy barrels and long-period lines (12-13s) that make for an epic surf session.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Shoulder months offer a mixed bag. April sees the tail end of winter swell, with average heights around 2m and periods of 11s, but the wind becomes more fickle—offshore only 30% of the time. September marks the beginning of the autumn transition; the ocean is still warm, and while the average swell drops to 1.6m (10.4s), occasional NW swells can still deliver clean, rippable waves when the wind aligns. These months require a bit more patience and a close eye on the forecast, but the rewards can be solid.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer is the quiet season at Costa Nova. The dominant high-pressure system over the Azores blocks major storm tracks, leading to small, weak swell (averages 1.4-1.7m, periods 8.6-9.9s). Most of the energy comes from the NW and NNW, which are onshore directions for this beach, resulting in bumpy, choppy conditions. Offshore wind (ENE-E-ESE-SE) is scarce, dropping to just 9-14% frequency in July and August. Occasional pulses from distant storms can bring fun-sized waves, but overall, expect groveling conditions and a lot of flat days. Best to save your energy for the winter months.

January: The Heart of Winter Fury

The North Atlantic roars to life in January, delivering an average swell height of 2.5m with a period of 12.9s. Swell is heavily dominated by the WNW (22%) and NW (18.5%) quadrants, with a solid contribution from W (6.3%) and NNW (6.6%). The energy is powerful and long-period—perfect for this west-facing beach. Wind conditions are favorable nearly half the month (49%), with offshore flows from the E (11%), ENE (8%), ESE (6.5%), and SE (6.6%) providing clean, groomed faces. Onshore wind from the W and NW only appears 6.8% of the time. Expect pumping, firey surf with frequent overhead-plus sets. This is primo surf season—charge hard.
