Best Surf Season (May - August)

The winter months deliver the most consistent and high-quality surf at Curl Curl. As the Tasman Sea comes alive with a steady stream of Southern Ocean lows, we see a notable increase in average wave periods, peaking around 9.5–9.7 seconds. The dominant swell direction shifts toward the SSE and S, which is right in the sweet spot for this southeast-facing beach. More importantly, the percentage of ideal offshore wind from the W to NW quadrants reaches its annual maximum—topping 40% in July. This combination of longer-period, punchy groundswell and clean, groomed faces creates the kind of conditions that make Curl Curl a true winter haven for surfers chasing power and shape.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

During the shoulder months, the transition between synoptic patterns brings a mixed bag. March and April see the fading of summer's northeasterly influence, with swell periods climbing into the 9.2–9.4 second range and offshore wind odds improving to 27–34%. September and October mirror this transition in reverse, as the winter westerlies begin to weaken and the trade wind influence reasserts itself. Swell heights remain solid around 1.6–1.7m, but the quality is less consistent—some days deliver lined-up SSE swell with light offshore breezes, while others are marred by onshore E to SE winds. Timing is everything during these months; those who pick the windows can score excellent waves.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The Australian summer corresponds with the least favorable conditions at Curl Curl. Average wave periods drop to 8.3–8.8 seconds, indicating a predominance of short-period, locally generated windswell rather than powerful groundswell. Offshore wind percentages fall to between 20–25%, meaning the prevailing onshore breezes from the E and SE—exactly the directions that ruin wave shape along this coast—are most common. While the swell heights remain in the 1.5–1.7m range, the accompanying chop and lack of period make for frustrating sessions. That said, when a strong southerly change sweeps through or a tropical low drifts south, a few days of cleaner conditions can salvage the season. But for reliable quality, these months are best left to the summer grovelers.
