Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of the south Indian Ocean summer delivers the most consistent offshore wind windows for this east-facing atoll. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts south, a robust subtropical ridge builds to the south, funnelling steady SW to WNW winds across the island. These offshore flows groom the long-period swell trains that radiate from distant Southern Ocean storms. While the dominant swell direction remains stubbornly from the S to SSE (a consequence of the persistent fetch in the Roaring Forties), the favourable wind direction means the waves are clean, lined up, and rippable. Average wave heights hover around 1.6-1.8m, with periods often reaching 11-12 seconds, offering punchy, powerful walls. This is the window for the best surf – not the biggest, but the most rideable.

Fair Surf Season (October - November & April)

The transitional months see a battle between the retreating winter monsoon and the building summer trade wind regime. In April, the offshore wind frequency drops to 28% as easterly flow begins to dominate, but the swell remains solid – average heights of 1.8m and periods of 12 seconds. October and November show a similar pattern in reverse: winds are still largely onshore from the E to SE, but occasional cold fronts from the south can stir up a brief window of SW winds. The swell direction remains from the S to SSE, so when the wind does cooperate, the quality jumps markedly. These months are best for the patient surfer willing to wait for the 20-30% chance of clean conditions.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The deep winter months bring the most consistent and largest swell of the year, but at a cost. The South Indian Ocean cyclone belt and persistent low-pressure systems generate enormous SE to S swell trains that hammer the island. Average wave heights climb from 2.1m in May to a staggering 2.6m in July and August, with periods of 11-12 seconds – these are heavy, powerful waves capable of holding a surfer’s attention. However, the accompanying SE to E trade winds blow steadily at 20-40kph, creating a relentless onshore chop that destroys wave face quality. The ideal wind percentage drops to an abysmal 1-3%. The result is a blocky, blown-out mess – a true challenge for even the most dedicated charger. While the sheer size is tempting, the consistency of onshore winds makes this the most difficult period to score a clean wave at Diego Garcia.

December: Holiday Stoke

December brings the holiday season and the best overall surf conditions of the year. Offshore wind frequency reaches 37%, with WNW (12%), W (10%), and WSW (8%) winds providing ample clean windows. Swell heights average 1.6m with a period of 11.0 seconds – a perfect combination for the east-facing reefs. The swell direction is still predominantly from SSE (41%) and S (28%), but there is a notable increase in SE (12%) as well as some SSW (10%) and SW (3%) contributions. These more south-westerly components, combined with the long period, wrap in nicely and produce well-shaped waves. The trade winds are in retreat, and the daily sea breeze is lighter. December is consistently good, with many days of clean, shoulder-high waves. It is the best month to plan a surf trip to Diego Garcia for a reliable mix of quality and size.
