The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering consistent, powerful, and long-period swell that lights up Doolin Point. Average wave heights range from 2.0m to 2.5m, with periods frequently exceeding 12 seconds, meaning serious, groundswell-driven sets. The prevailing fetch from the west and southwest aligns perfectly with the spot's WSW exposure, so the swell is well-refracted and focused. The catch? A typical winter storm track spins up a ton of onshore wind from the SW to W quadrant, so the offshore window from N through ENE is often narrow. Yet when a cold front clears and high pressure builds, the combo of big, clean lines and light offshore winds is world-class. This is the prime time for pushing your limits.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As the ocean transitions, energy levels drop but consistency remains decent. Swell heights average 1.2-1.4m and periods fall to the 8-10s range, offering smaller, punchier waves. The wind regime becomes more variable, with an increased frequency of offshore (N to ENE) breezes—pushing ideal wind percentages to 21-22%. You'll face more wind-affected days from the SW too, but the smaller swell is less demanding. This season is ideal for longboarders or those seeking a more relaxed session with cleaner conditions, but don't expect the raw power of winter.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer heat brings a marked decline in swell size and period. Average wave heights hover around 1.1-1.2m, with periods often below 9s, resulting in weak, short-period waves that struggle to break cleanly at Doolin Point. The dominant swell still comes from the W and WSW, but it lacks the energy to produce memorable waves. Onshore winds from the SW to W sector are common, with ideal wind percentages dropping to 14-18%. The rare day with a northerly breeze and a small pulse of fetch can still be fun for a grovel session, but overall, this is a season best spent on other activities or waiting for the fall transition.

April: Cleaner but Smaller

Average swell height drops to 1.4m and period to 10.8s, signaling a clear step down from winter. Swell direction remains strongly from the W (30.1%) and WNW (24.4%), with a healthy portion of WSW (16.5%). While the energy is less, the periods are still in the rideable range (10s+). The big improvement comes in the wind: ideal wind percentage jumps to 22%. Offshore flows from the N (6.6%), NNE (5.5%), NE (5.7%), and ENE (6.1%) are more common and often lighter. Onshore winds (S through W) are still present but less aggressive. This produces more frequent clean, smaller days perfect for fine-tuning technique on a shortboard or cruising on a log.
