Best Surf Season (April - October)

The heart of Dreamland's surf season beats during the dry monsoon, from April through October. The Indian Ocean roars to life, sending powerful, long-period groundswells from the deep south – primarily SSW and SW – that wrap beautifully into this west-facing reef. Simultaneously, the trade winds lock in from the east (ENE through SE), blowing clean offshore and grooming each face to perfection. Average swell heights hover in the solid 1.5-2.5m range, with periods often exceeding 14 seconds, delivering pumping, heavy barrels and long, rippable walls. September and October stand out as the crown jewels, with ideal wind conditions over 75% of the time and consistent swell in the fun-to-pumping zone. This is when Dreamland truly fires, offering world-class waves for those who chase the season.

Fair Surf Season (March & November)

Shoulder months March and November serve as transitional windows. In March, the southwest monsoon is waning, but winds still blow offshore (E-ESE) a solid 44% of the time. Swell remains plentiful with an average 1.6m and long 13.3s period, though the dominant direction shifts slightly back toward SSW. November sees the trades re-establish after the wet season's onset, with offshore winds 66% of the time and consistent 1.6m, 13.2s swell. While conditions can be good, the swell energy is slightly less consistent, and occasional onshore pulses from the west can blow out the lineup. These months offer quality sessions between the peaks, especially for those who can read the shifting patterns.

Low Surf Season (November - March, but especially December-February)

The wet monsoon from November through March brings a dramatic increase in westerly winds (W, WSW, WNW), which blow directly onshore at Dreamland and ruin wave quality. From December to February, ideal offshore wind drops below 25%, and the swell, though still present at an average 1.6-1.7m and long period, is often accompanied by choppy, messy conditions. The predominant swell direction shifts to a more direct SW and even WSW, but the relentless onshore flow makes the waves difficult to surf. November and March are the bookends where windows of clean conditions can occur, but December through February is largely a write-off for quality surf at this spot. Patience is key – wait for a break in the westerly pattern to score some fun-sized waves before the trades return.

May: Peak Power Building

May brings a noticeable jump in swell size, averaging 1.9m with an even longer 14.1s period – the trenches are activated. The wind remains heavily offshore, with ESE dominating at 55.4% and ideal conditions 61% of the time. The trades are strong but manageable, often in the 10-20 and 20-30 kph range. Swell direction is predominantly SSW (44.8%) and S (31.0%), with a growing SSE component (11.4%). The 1.5-2.5m range is the sweet spot, offering pumping, hollow waves. The south-southwest groundswell is now hitting with more consistency, and Dreamland's reef starts to show its true potential. Long-period energy from deep Southern Ocean lows often arrives with a clean face, and offshore winds hold all day. This is a prime month for consistent, high-quality surf – expect rippable walls and some heavy barrels on the sets. The only downside is occasional wind speeds above 30 kph from ESE, which can create a bit of bump, but overall, it's a surfer's paradise.
