Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere is prime time for Dungeons. The long-fetch swells generated by the Roaring Forties become a consistent presence, with average heights pushing above 2.6m and periods often exceeding 12 seconds. The ideal offshore wind from the north to northeast quadrant becomes more frequent as strong high-pressure systems stall over the interior, occasionally setting up clean conditions. While the percentage of perfect wind remains modest (up to 22% in June), when it aligns with a solid SW to SSW groundswell, the wave quality is simply world-class. This is the time to charge.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

These transitional months see the swell machine still active but less consistent. Average heights linger around 2.4-2.7m with solid periods, but the wind patterns are more chaotic. The transition between summer and winter circulation brings a mix of onshore SE trades and the first or last pushes of cold fronts. While you won't score the pumping consistency of winter, the cleaner windows offer fun, powerful surf, especially when a passing front clears the air and delivers a crisp north wind. It's a gamble, but the rewards can be good.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The summer months are the most challenging for surfers at Dungeons. Average swells drop to around 2.3m, and the wave period sits in the 11-second range – still punchy but less powerful. The bigger issue is the wind: persistent SE to SSE winds (often over 30kph) blow directly onshore, ruining wave quality. The ideal offshore wind from the north occurs only 5-6% of the time. While occasional southerly swells do arrive, they are usually accompanied by onshore conditions. This season is defined by waiting game – best for the patient surfer who can spot a rare north wind window.

May: Winter Swell Takes Hold

Winter announces itself with an average swell of 2.6m and a period of 12.4s. The swell energy shifts dramatically: SW swell now accounts for 25.7% and WSW for 11.9%, indicating powerful long-period groundswell. The offshore wind window opens wider: north winds (N, NNW, NW) total over 17%, and the ideal wind percentage jumps to 21%. While SE and SSE winds are still strong (31.1%), the battle lines are drawn. This month produces some of the first truly great days of the season, especially when a strong high sits over the Karoo, funnelling cool north winds across the coast.
