Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the southern hemisphere winter, the Tasman Sea comes alive with a consistent diet of mid-period swell from the east and southeast. Average wave periods peak at 8.8-8.9 seconds, delivering punchy, rideable waves in the 1-1.5m range. Most importantly, the wind machine flips in your favor: offshore flows from the SW, WSW, and WNW dominate over 60% of the time, groom the beachbreak and keep the lines clean. This is prime time for Duranbah – smaller but glassy mornings give way to fun-sized rippable waves all day.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

In the transition months, the ocean is still active but you have to play the conditions. March and April see slightly larger swell (1.2m average) from the E and ESE, with periods around 8.5-8.6s – solid and rippable. Offshore wind frequencies climb to 43% in April, while September and October offer a mix of clean mornings and building sea breezes. The swell period drops to 7.4-7.8s, meaning shorter, choppier lines unless a storm track aligns. Still, windows of quality exist, especially when a high-pressure system parks over the Tasman Sea and funnels pure westerlies down the coast.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer brings the smallest swell of the year and persistent onshore winds that wreak havoc on wave shape. Average heights hover just over 1m but the average period sinks to 7.3-8.0s, producing weak, short-interval lumps. Worse, the wind is ideal only 20-25% of the time – northeast to east trades blow straight onshore, turning the lineup into a bumpy mess. While occasional tropical lows can spin up a fun SE swell, the odds are stacked against consistently good waves at Duranbah. Expect crowded, choppy days with the occasional early-morning window before the seabreeze kicks in.

June: Winter Prime Time

June delivers the highest ideal wind percentage of the year at 64%. Offshore directions (SW through WNW) account for a combined 43.7% of all wind observations, with light to moderate speeds (0-20kph) prevailing. Swell averages 1.0m but the period peaks at 8.9s – long-period groundswell is not uncommon. The E and ESE sectors still lead (22.1% and 25.7% respectively), but SE swell is also notable at 21.2%. That SE component can be a little crossed-up, but with reliable westerly winds, Duranbah often sees clean, lined-up waves. The 0.5-1m range dominates, but 1-1.5m is frequent. Early winter brings the best combination of consistent swell and glassy conditions – get out before 10am for the ultimate experience.
