Easkey Right seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter kicks into full gear from October through March, delivering the most consistent swell energy to Easkey Right. During these months, average wave heights range from 2.0m in October to a peak of 2.7m in January, with long periods averaging 11-12.5 seconds. This is when the big extratropical lows spin up, sending powerful, long-period swell towards the Irish coast. The catch? The dominant swell direction is often from the W-WNW, which, while not ideal for this north-facing reef, can still offer good pulses when it fills into the NW-NNW window. Wind is the wildcard – winter storms often bring strong onshores from the NW-W, but when a high-pressure system parks over the UK or Scandinavia, we get classic offshore winds from the SSE-SSW. The combination of a solid NW swell and light SSE wind is what we dream about. Expect pumping, firing conditions up to XL size when everything aligns, but also plenty of blown-out, messy days. This is the season for experienced chargers.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September act as the transitional shoulder months at Easkey Right. April sees the North Atlantic storm track starting to weaken, with average swell heights dropping to 1.7m and periods to 10.7s. The swell direction shifts slightly – we still see a lot of W and WNW energy, but the proportion of NW and NNW swell increases, which is a plus for the spot. Winds are less aggressive, with a higher chance of lighter onshores or offshore breezes from the S and SW. September is the mirror image: the ocean is still warm from summer, and the first autumn storms begin to stir, pushing average heights back to 1.7m with periods of 10.2s. The wind is often lighter and more variable, with a decent shot of offshore flows from the SSE-SSW. Both months offer fun to good waves on the right swell-wind combo, often with smaller crowds than the peak winter. This is a great time for intermediate surfers to get solid, rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

During the summer months from May through August, Easkey Right experiences its smallest and weakest surf of the year. Average wave heights hover around 1.2-1.4m with periods dropping to 8.6-9.6s. The swell energy is largely windswell from the NW-NNW quadrant, which can produce small, weak waves that are often on the choppy side, especially when onshore winds dominate. The good news? Summer brings the highest percentage of ideal offshore wind conditions, averaging 25-30% of the time, thanks to high-pressure systems that deliver lighter SSE-SW winds. However, the lack of consistent, long-period groundswell means those offshore days often yield only small, grovelly waves. It’s not all bad – on the rare occasion a summer low pushes south, we can see a pulse of fun-sized waves. But overall, expect micro to small swells with occasional good windows. This is the time for longboarders, beginners, or those looking for a mellow session.

Conditions at Easkey Right in November

November: Full Winter Mode

November solidifies the winter pattern with average swell heights of 2.3m and periods of 11.6s. The swell direction is largely from the WNW (15.6%) and W (13.2%), but also significant contributions from NW (9.6%) and NNW (9.9%). Wave sizes range from solid 1.5-2m up to over 2.5m, offering pumping to firing conditions when the direction is right. The offshore wind window (SSE to SW) occurs about 28.0% of the time, though wind speeds are often moderate to strong. The onshore winds from the NW-N quadrant are also frequent (~15.2%). The month is characterized by a rapid succession of low-pressure systems, so windows of good weather are small but can deliver pristine conditions. When a cold front passes and high pressure builds from the west, you get classic offshore S winds with a building W to NW swell – the perfect recipe for Easkey. November is a prime month for big-wave enthusiasts, but be ready to battle crowds on the best days. It’s a consistent, raw month for dedicated surfers.
