Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machine spins up from October through March, delivering the highest average swell heights (1.7–2.2m) and longest periods (11.4–12.9s) of the year. While the dominant swell direction remains from the NNW to NW – outside the spot's ideal window of NNE to E – the sheer size and power allow occasional wrap around the headlands. More importantly, this is when the few optimal offshore wind events from SSW to W are most likely to align, especially in October, November, and December when the 'ideal for surfing' statistic peaks at 10%. These months are your best bet for a few days of clean, long-period groundswell with smooth faces.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Spring and early autumn offer a mixed bag. April still sees some decent NW groundswell (average 1.9m / 10.9s), but the frequency of strong onshore northerlies increases, making clean conditions rarer. May sees a drop in average period to 9.5s, with swell often being more windswell than groundswell. September is a transitional month – the average period climbs to 10.0s as the first autumn lows form, but the wind statistics show a heavy dominance of NNE winds (48.4%), which are strongly onshore for the spot. Surf quality is inconsistent, requiring careful timing.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the low point for El Muelle. The average swell height drops to 1.4–1.6m, and periods plummet to 7.7–8.5s – mostly short-period, wind-driven chop. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the N to NNE, which is slightly better than winter's NW, but the wind is the real killer. Northerly winds dominate over 90% of the time, ruining the surface and making for onshore, messy conditions. The 'ideal for surfing' statistic is a paltry 0–2%. This is the time to tune your gear, not your wave count. The rare chance comes from a Southerly thermal breeze in the late afternoon, but it's inconsistent and weak.

July: The Doldrums

July is the most challenging month for surfing at El Muelle. Average swell height is 1.6m (but mostly short-period), and the period is the lowest of the year at 7.7s. Swell direction is dominated by N (46.6%) and NNE (25.6%). The wind data is brutal: NNE wind alone accounts for 57.5% of the time, often at 20-40kph, creating horrendous onshore conditions. The 'ideal for surfing' percentage is 0%. The wave height is mostly in the 1-1.5m range, but it is all choppy, messy, and groveling. Avoid unless you see a magical Southerly breeze or a rare tropical swell – but both are exceptionally unlikely.
