El Sardinero, with its Ost-Nord-Ost orientation, is perfectly positioned to capture the lion's share of this energy. Average swell heights range from 1.6m to 2.1m with long periods of 11-13 seconds, delivering pumping waves that can reach firing proportions. The crucial wind factor aligns as well: the percentage of ideal offshore winds (SSW, SW, WSW, W) peaks between 43% and 50%, allowing for clean, hollow faces. This is the prime window for serious surfing, from the first autumn swells in October through the deep winter grind.

Summer settles in with a persistent Azores High, suppressing storm activity in the North Atlantic. Swell heights dwindle to around 1.0m and periods drop below 10 seconds, resulting in small, weak, and often choppy surf. The wind direction frequency shifts towards onshore breezes from N to ENE, further degrading wave quality. While fun-sized days occur, they are rare and generally demand groveling equipment. This is the off-season for local surfers, best suited for longboard or beginner sessions.

May: Small but Rippable

May's average swell height drops to 1.2m with a period of 10.0 seconds, signaling the transition to summer. The swell direction is overwhelmingly NW (53.0%) and NNW (21.8%), but the wave heights are mostly in the 0.5-1.5m range. Ideal wind occurs 41% of the time, with a shift towards lighter winds from the S and W. This month produces fun, rippable waves, but often on the small side. Longboarders will enjoy the groveling conditions. The occasional late spring storm can still boost the swell, but it's a rare treat.
