Best Surf Season (April - November)

From mid-spring through late autumn, the Pacific coast of Nicaragua comes alive with consistent, high-quality surf. This is when the Southern Hemisphere winter swells are fully dialed in, sending powerful, long-period groundswell from the South Pacific. At El Transito, a SW-facing beach, this translates into an overwhelming dominance of SSW and SW swell – the golden directions for this setup. Average wave heights hover in the 1.2-1.3 m range with periods consistently exceeding 13 seconds, putting surf squarely in the 'fun, solid, rippable' category and often reaching 'pumping' levels on the better pulses. The offshore wind window (NNW-W) also improves markedly, with ideal wind frequency climbing above 50% from April onward and peaking at over 70% in July and November. This means the combination of groomed, lined-up swell and clean surface conditions becomes the rule rather than the exception. The long, consistent periods allow the energy to wrap efficiently into the bay, delivering steep, pitching waves that are a joy to ride. It is the prime window for anyone seeking consistent, high-performance surf.

Fair Surf Season (December, March)

These transitional months sit on the edges of the prime window and offer a mixed bag. In March, the swell machine is already revving up – SSW pulses become more common (39% of all swell), and average periods hit a healthy 13.5 s. However, the wind quality hasn't fully shifted yet, with ideal offshore conditions only occurring about 40% of the time. Expect clean mornings with afternoon glass-offs, but also a higher risk of onshore or cross-shore winds that can mess up the wave face. December holds onto solid wind statistics (62% ideal), but the swell direction drifts back to S and SSW at a smaller scale, and the average height drops to 1.0 m. The waves remain fun-sized and rideable, but the punch of the big winter swells is gone. Both months reward flexible surfers who know how to read the forecast and time their sessions.

Low Surf Season (January, February)

Mid-winter is the quietest time for El Transito. While the average period stays impressively long (12.2-12.7 s) due to distant Southern Ocean storms, the swell direction leans heavily toward S and SSW – with the S component being less optimal for the SW-facing beach. The percentage of swell arriving from the ideal SSW-SW window drops to just 30-33% in these months. Average wave heights sit at 1.0-1.1 m, so there's still enough juice for a grovel board, but consistent overhead sets are rare. The biggest challenge, however, is the wind. Ideal offshore conditions are present only 36-44% of the time. The dominant wind regime comes from the ENE (57-58% of all wind readings), which blows directly side-on to the lineup, creating bumpy, less organized waves. Surfable days do exist – often early in the morning before the trades kick in or when a cold front pushes a brief NW breeze – but patience and a small-wave quiver are essential.

March: The Transition Begins

March marks a turning point as the Southern Hemisphere winter swell machine starts to rev up. The average wave height holds at 1.1 m, but the period jumps to a strong 13.5 s – now in the 'powerful, long period' territory. More importantly, the swell direction shifts: SSW now accounts for 39% of all swell, and SW adds another 6.4%, bringing the optimal direction total to about 45%. This is a significant uptick from the winter doldrums. Wave heights begin to show more variety, with the 1-1.5 m range becoming very common, especially for the SSW swells. The wind, however, remains a work in progress. Ideal offshore flow occurs only 40% of the time, with ENE winds (49.1%) still the dominant feature. But there is a growing frequency of lighter NW and W breeze in the mornings. The surf quality is bipolar: clean, glassy, lined-up sets when the wind plays ball, and bumpy, lumpy conditions when the trades kick in. March rewards surfers who are willing to get up early and read the wind models closely.
