Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Pacific high-pressure system strengthens during autumn, setting up a reliable gradient that funnels offshore winds from the northeast and north quadrants toward the coast. Combined with long-period southern hemisphere swells that have traveled thousands of miles across the equator, Escolleras lights up with clean, powerful lines. Average wave heights hover around 1.0-1.2m but with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, delivering that coveted push. January, February, and December see ideal wind frequencies above 57%, making these months prime time for uncrowded sessions. The occasional cold front can swing the wind onshore, but the dominant pattern favors glassy mornings and groomed afternoon waves.

Fair Surf Season (April - May)

As spring progresses, the continental landmass heats up, weakening the offshore wind regime. April and May still see average swell heights climbing to 1.3-1.4m as the southern ocean kicks into gear, but the percentage of ideal wind drops to 42-47%. Early mornings often deliver clean conditions before the sea breeze builds, but afternoon onshore flow from the south becomes more common. The wave period remains long, offering punchy, rippable waves, especially on days when the wind plays along. This is a transitional window for the opportunistic surfer who doesn't mind checking the forecast daily.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer settles in with a vengeance, and the trade winds shift to a predominantly onshore pattern. The percentage of favorable offshore wind plummets to 33-45%, with south, southwest, and west-southwest winds dominating. While these months actually produce the largest average swell heights of the year — peaking at 1.5m in June and August — the waves are often choppy and wind-affected. Long-period swells from the southern hemisphere still arrive, but they face a constant battle against the south wind. The brief windows of offshore flow that do occur (usually at dawn) can offer epic, hollow conditions, but they are fleeting. For the dedicated surfer, this is a game of patience and timing.

June: Southern Swell Peak, Windy Battle

June hits the highest average swell height of 1.5m with a period of 13.8 seconds. Swell is almost entirely from SSW (76.9%) and S (13.5%), with a substantial 25.7% in the 1.5-2m range and 2.7% over 2.5m. Unfortunately, ideal wind plummets to 33%, the lowest of the year. Wind is predominantly from the south, southeast, and west quadrants: SE (7.7%), SSE (7.7%), S (7.2%), SSW (8.4%), SW (12.2%), and WSW (11.4%). These onshore directions make for difficult conditions — choppy, bumpy waves. Only the most dedicated early risers may find a brief offshore window from NNE (5.5%) or NE (5.0%).
