Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter brings consistent, powerful swell to the Azores and Portugal, and Faja da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is no exception. From October through March, average wave heights range from 1.5m to 1.9m with periods averaging 9-10.5 seconds. The south-facing orientation is ideally suited to capture the SW to S swells that develop from deep low pressure systems tracking across the Atlantic. However, these same storms often deliver onshore SW to S winds, limiting the quality windows to around 8-13% of the time. When a ridge of high pressure builds to the north, offshore N to NNW winds groom the long period swell into clean, powerful lines — that's when this spot truly fires. The months of January, February, and December offer the biggest average swell heights, and November and March are close behind.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the storm track weakens in spring and early fall, the average swell height drops to 1.1-1.5m with periods of 8.7-9.4s. The good news: the percentage of offshore wind increases to 15-20%, and the winds tend to be lighter. This means more frequent rideable conditions, even if the waves are not as powerful. South swell can still make its way into the bay, and with clean north winds, these days offer fun, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. April and May see a transition toward smaller surf, while September marks the beginning of the autumn upswing. The window for quality surf is wider but the size is modest.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer in the North Atlantic is dominated by the Azores High, which suppresses storm activity and results in minimal swell generation. Average wave heights drop to 0.8-1.0m with short periods of 8.5s, often windswell from the north or northwest. While the frequency of offshore N to NE winds peaks at 25-33%, the waves are generally too small for good surfing — mostly micro to groveling conditions. Only occasional long period groundswell from distant southern hemisphere storms, or a rare tropical system, can provide a day of fun waves. The summer months are best left for sightseeing, but local windswell can provide small sessions for longboarders and beginners.

June: Summer Slumber

June enters the low surf season with an average height of just 1.0m and a period of 8.5s. The optimal south swell directions (S, SSW, SW) combine for only 13.8%, and the majority of that is under 1.5m. The swell is often windswell from the NW to N quadrant. On the bright side, the wind is ideal 25% of the time, with N (6.7%), NNE (8.1%), and NE (6.6%) providing offshore flow. Unfortunately, the wave heights are mostly too small for much more than micro sessions. Occasional long period pulses from distant southern hemisphere storms can lift the height into the fun zone, but June is generally a month for flat spells and sightseeing.
