Best Surf Season (October - March)

The South African summer months from October through March offer the highest chance of combining favorable east-northeast swell with clean offshore winds. While the dominant swell direction at Fence is from the south-southwest (a direction that wraps poorly into this northeast-facing beach), the slight uptick in east-northeast pulses during this period provides the most surfable conditions. The synoptic pattern is driven by a semi-permanent South Atlantic high that pumps southeasterly trade winds, but cold fronts tracking west to east often bring a welcome shift to southwest-west winds that blow directly offshore. When these fronts align with a remnant east swell or a local sea breeze, the setup can produce punchy, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. However, with only about a quarter of the time offering ideal wind and swell alignment, patience is required.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transitional months where the swell spectrum begins to shift. In April, the last of the east-northeast swells can still deliver fun waves, especially if southerly winds remain light. September sees a resurgence of south swells as winter wanes, but occasional east pulses creep back in. Wind patterns are more variable, with a higher frequency of onshore easterlies that spoil the conditions. Still, the decreasing wind speeds and improving swell periods make these months a gamble worth taking for the dedicated surfer.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The southern hemisphere winter from May to August is the most challenging time at Fence. The swell window is dominated by powerful, long-period south to southwest swells generated by intense mid-latitude storms, but these waves arrive from angles that are nearly opposite to the beach's northeast exposure. As a result, most days are flat — the beach is effectively shadowed from the most energetic swell. When any wave energy does wrap in, it is often accompanied by strong onshore easterlies that accompany the high-pressure cells. The few surfable days come from rare east-northeast swells that manage to sneak in, or from a sudden wind shift to offshore with a passing front. The average wave height statistics of 2.2-2.4m are misleading because they include significant south swell that never reaches the shore. In reality, surfable waves are small and infrequent.

These windows are brief and unpredictable, but for the dedicated local, they are the first signs of the coming spring shift. Expect waves in the 0.5-1m range on those rare occasions.
