Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the austral winter, the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean come alive, generating powerful long-period swell trains that march towards the South African coastline. Flowrider, with its east-southeast exposure, picks up the majority of this energy, while the persistent high-pressure systems tracking south of the continent set up a reliable offshore flow from the west to northwest. This creates the perfect equation: consistent swell in the 1-2.5m range with an average period of 10-11 seconds, combined with clean, glassy conditions up to 60% of the time. June stands out as the absolute peak month, when the combination of strong frontal systems and a well-positioned South Atlantic High delivers the most frequent offshore winds and some of the longest period swell of the year. This is the time to point your board towards Flowrider and expect punchy, rippable waves with the occasional pumping set.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see the shift between summer and winter regimes. April still feels the tail end of summer, but the frequency of offshore winds begins to climb to around 40%. Swell heights remain solid, and periods increase through April, making for fun sessions. September is the flip side, as winter loosens its grip offshore wind frequency drops to 34% but long period swell still rolls in from the Southern Ocean. During these months, you'll need to time your sessions carefully, picking days when a cold front passes and the wind swings offshore. On those days, expect good quality waves, but with less consistency than the winter core.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer in South Africa brings a different pattern to Flowrider. The dominant wind shifts to the northeast and east, blowing directly onshore and turning the ocean into a choppy mess. While swell still arrives from the east and southeast, the average period drops to 8-9 seconds, meaning less power and more closeouts. The offshore wind window shrinks to just 18-29% of the time, mostly during brief periods when a weak trough or coastal low nudges the wind to the west. The best chance for clean waves during these months is early morning before the thermal seabreeze kicks in, or on the rare occasion a cold front pushes far enough north to deliver a westerly wind shift. If you're flexible and patient, you can still find fun-sized waves, but don't expect firing conditions.

August: Late Winter – Still Pumping, but Winds Weakening

August marks the late winter season, and while the swell is still very good, the offshore wind consistency begins to taper to 47%. The average swell period drops slightly to 10.2s, but wave heights reach the seasonal peak average of 1.8m. Swell directions shift a bit more eastward, with east-northeast (14.2%) and east (14.2%) becoming more prominent alongside the continuing southerly swell (20.9%). The wind pattern still shows a healthy westerly component, especially west-northwest (6.7%), but the frequency of onshore northeast winds (11.6%) and east-northeast (7.3%) increases. The result is still plenty of pumping sessions, but you need to be more selective. Early mornings and days with a strong high-pressure system to the south will yield the best conditions. August offers a last chance to score winter gems before the autumn transition looms.
