Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic fires on all cylinders from October through March, delivering a non-stop conveyor belt of powerful, long-period groundswell. Foz do Lizandro's west-northwest orientation is perfectly positioned to capture the dominant WNW to NW swell trains that march across the Atlantic. Average wave heights range from 2.0m to 2.6m, with periods consistently in the 11-13 second range – right in the powerful, long period sweet spot. Ideal offshore winds from the western quadrant (WNW through SW) are most frequent during these months, with ideal wind percentages climbing to 20-25%. This is prime time for quality surf at Lizandro, with plenty of punchy, hollow waves on offer.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September represent transitional months. Swell activity remains respectable with averages around 2.0m and periods around 11 seconds. However, the consistency drops and the percentage of ideal offshore wind decreases to 13% in April and 12% in September. Longer breaks between swell events, combined with a more fickle wind regime, make these months less reliable than the peak season. Still, with a keen eye on the charts, you can score clean, fun-sized waves under favourable conditions.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, the North Atlantic storm track retreats northward, causing a significant drop in swell energy. Average wave heights fall to between 1.4m and 1.7m, and periods shorten to the 8-10 second range. The dominant swell direction shifts to NNW and NW, which are still okay, but the wind becomes the main challenge. The prevailing northerly Nortada wind regime dominates, with north winds blowing at moderate to fresh speeds 30-40% of the time. These winds are cross-shore to slightly onshore at Lizandro, leading to bumpy, choppy surface conditions. Ideal offshore wind percentages plummet to 3-9% in these months. Combined with smaller swell and weaker periods, the overall surf quality is subpar. However, occasional early-morning offshore easterlies or a fleeting summer groundswell can still produce the odd session.

January: The Heart of Winter Swell

January is the peak of the North Atlantic storm season, and Foz do Lizandro reaps the rewards. The average swell height is a hefty 2.6m, with a long average period of 13.0 seconds – squarely in the 'powerful, long period' bracket. Swell direction is dominated by NW (21.9% of all swells) and WNW (17.7%), both optimal for the WNW-facing beach. Combined, these two quadrants account for nearly 40% of all observations. Wind is ideal 25% of the time, the highest of any month. The wind rose shows a broad spread with significant contributions from NNE and N (which are cross-shore to slightly onshore), but winds from the western quadrant (WNW, W, WSW, SW) – our offshore sweet spot – occur roughly 15-20% of the time together. When a deep low pressure system tracks south of Iceland or across the British Isles, Lizandro lights up with long, grinding walls and hollow sections. The NAO index often tips positive, steering storms towards the Iberian Peninsula. Expect pumping conditions whenever a clean west-northwest groundswell coincides with light offshore easterlies or the rare westerly offshore flow.
