Best Surf Season (October - March)

Gokarna's west-southwest facing coastline comes alive during the Northern Hemisphere winter and early spring, driven by the strengthening of the Indian Ocean subtropical high and the northeast monsoon. From October to March, the combination of consistent long-period groundswells generated by distant mid-latitude storms in the Southern Indian Ocean and favorable offshore winds creates the most reliable surf conditions. Average swell heights range from 0.7m to 0.9m with periods often exceeding 10 seconds, delivering punchy, clean waves. Offshore winds from the east-northeast quadrant (NE through ESE) dominate, with ideal wind frequencies peaking at 56% in November. This is the window for classic Gokarna surf: groomed lines peeling over the rocky points.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The transition months of April and September offer a mixed bag. April sees a jump in average swell height to 0.9m and a long period of 10.7s, but the wind reliability drops to only 11% ideal as the east-northeasterly winds weaken and give way to increasing westerly flow. September marks the tail end of the southwest monsoon, with average swell still a solid 1.3m and 9.6s period, but again only 12% of the time with clean offshore winds. These months require patience and a keen eye on the forecast to score windows of clean surf between onshore wind streaks.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The southwest monsoon dominates from May through August, bringing a dramatic increase in average swell heights (peaking at 2.4m in July) but with a severe trade-off: nearly constant strong onshore winds from the west and northwest. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 0-5%, making for choppy, blown-out conditions most of the time. While the raw power is there with waves often in the 1.5-2.5m range, the quality is severely compromised. Only the most dedicated, washed-out surfer would find this season appealing. Occasional lulls in the monsoon wind can offer brief windows, but they are rare and unpredictable.

July: Peak Monsoon – Massive but Messy

July is the heart of the southwest monsoon, delivering the largest average swell of the year at 2.4m with a period of 10.4s. Swell is almost exclusively from the W (34.2%) and WSW (26%), producing powerful, heavy waves often exceeding 2m. But the wind offers zero percent ideal offshore conditions. Onshore winds from W (38.2%), WSW (26.4%), and WNW (22%) dominate at moderate to strong speeds, creating blown-out, lumpy conditions. The raw power is awe-inspiring, but surfable waves are rare. Only a few sheltered corners might offer a demoralizing session.
