Best Surf Season (November - February)

The heart of winter brings the most consistent action to Gruissan. As the Mediterranean churns under the influence of strong Mistral events, NW and WNW windswell becomes dominant, delivering punchy, rideable waves in the 1-1.5m range with periods averaging 5-5.5s. The offshore wind component is highest during these months, with ideal wind (W to NNW) blowing 21-26% of the time, ensuring clean faces and peaky conditions on the sandbars. While long period groundswell is rare, the reliable short-period swell coupled with favorable wind windows makes this the premium window for Gruissan.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, October)

Shoulder months see a transition. October benefits from the early-season storm track, offering similar swell heights to winter but with slightly less consistent offshore wind (20% ideal). March and April still see solid NW windswell, but the average wave height drops to 0.9-1.0m and the winds become more variable, especially with increasing sea breezes from the S/SE that can spoil afternoon sessions. The swell period remains short, and you'll need to pick your days carefully.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

The arrival of summer brings a dramatic shutdown. The Mediterranean settles into a typical anticyclonic pattern, dominated by thermal low pressure and sea breezes. Wave heights plummet to 0.6-0.7m on average, with periods dropping below 4.5s, often too small and choppy for a decent wave. The wind regime shifts towards more onshore directions (E to SSE) as the prevailing winds become more easterly. Ideal offshore wind drops to 12-15%, making clean, rideable swell a rare commodity. Unless a late-season storm or a weak frontal passage graces the region, Gruissan is best left to the flat spells and summer sup.

January: The Peak of Winter Windswell

January is the most consistent month for surfing at Gruissan. The average swell height reaches 1.1m, the highest of the year, with an average period of 5.3s, indicating primarily short-period windswell driven by frequent Mistral events. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the NW (20.4%) and WNW (16.1%), which generates directly offshore wind conditions given the beach's ESE exposure. The 1-2m range is well represented, with 8.2% of waves in the 1-1.5m class and 8.2% in the 1.5-2m class from NW, along with some 2-2.5m waves (4.1%). Ideal offshore wind (W to NNW) occurs 26% of the time, with the strongest component from WNW (41.6% of wind observations, much of it at 20-40kph). This combination delivers clean, punchy surf ideal for shortboards and fish. The main challenge is the onshore wind from SE to S; when the Mistral relaxes, these directions increase, especially during the passage of low-pressure systems from the south, ruining the shape. Overall, January is prime time.
