Crucially, the percentage of offshore wind (N through E) peaks from December through February, topping out at 62% in December. When the wind locks in from the E or NE and a strong W-NW swell arrives, the point comes alive with clean, lined-up waves. This is the prime window for scoring Hash Point at its best.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months mark the shift between winter fury and summer doldrums. In April, the average swell height drops slightly to 2.0m, and the period shortens to ~11s, but there are still occasional pulses of NW groundswell. Offshore wind frequency falls to around 39%, meaning more days with variable or onshore flow. September sees a similar pattern – average height 1.5m, period 10s, with wind ideal 46% of the time. While not as consistent or powerful as winter, these months can still deliver fun sessions when a late-season storm or an early autumn front aligns with an easterly breeze.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in over the North Atlantic, and the storm track shifts northward, leading to a significant drop in swell energy at Hash Point. Average wave heights fall to 1.6m and periods shrink to the 7-9 second range – often powerless and short-period. The swell direction becomes heavily dominated by the NNW (over 93% in July and August), which is far from ideal for this WSW-facing spot. Furthermore, the frequency of offshore wind dips to its lowest levels (35-48%), with increasing northwesterly and westerly components that blow directly onshore. During these months, the surf is typically small, weak, and bumpy – best for a longboard or a groveler, but far from the quality that winter brings.

September is a transitional month: the swell size is still small (1.5m average), but the period improves to 10.1s, the first time it passes 10 seconds since April. This signals the return of longer-period groundswell. The swell direction is still mostly NNW (74.0%), but there's a notable increase in NW (19.0%) and even some WNW (2.0%). Offshore wind frequency is 46%, and the wind distribution starts to show more easterly influence – E and ENE combined make up about 7.1% now. The onset of autumn storms in the North Atlantic can produce occasional swell events that reach Hash Point. When a strong low-pressure system forms off Newfoundland and sends NW swell southward, and an easterly wind sets up due to a high-pressure ridge over Europe, the conditions can quickly turn good. September is a month to keep an eye on the charts, as it offers the best chance for quality waves since April. The still-warm water and air temperatures add to the appeal.
