Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with average swell heights climbing from 1.3m in October to a peak of 1.6m in January. The predominant swell direction shifts decisively into the optimal window from WSW through NW, thanks to a parade of extratropical storms tracking across the Norwegian Sea. Wave periods average 8.0-8.5s, often pushing into the powerful 10-14s range when a deep low aligns perfectly. The catch? Wind is only ideal (from ENE to SE) 10-15% of the time, as westerly gales frequently accompany the same storms that deliver the swell. Yet when a blocking high sets up over Scandinavia or the Baltic, the coast gets clean offshore breezes and long-period groundswell – that’s when Hellesto truly fires.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These shoulder months see a noticeable drop in both average height (0.9-1.0m) and period (7.1-7.5s), but the quality can still be decent. In April, the swell mix includes a higher proportion of NW and WNW energy, while September benefits from early-autumn lows. Ideal wind odds sit around 9-12%, and the lighter winds of spring and early fall make for smoother surfaces when the direction aligns. This is the time to watch for transitional windows – a passing low followed by high pressure from the east can yield clean, rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Hellesto is a quiet affair. Average swell heights dwindle to 0.7-0.8m, periods sag to 6.0-6.8s, and the percentage of ideal wind plummets to 5-7%. The swell direction is dominated by NW and WNW but at very low heights – mostly in the too small or small categories. Meanwhile, the wind regime is ruled by NNW and N winds (often onshore or side-onshore for a west-facing beach). The rare exception comes during a summer low that brushes the coast, but generally the waves are micro, choppy, and only worth a paddle on a log or for the most dedicated frother.

October: Peak Season Begins – Building Swells, Tricky Winds

October signals the start of the best surf season with a sharp increase in activity. Average swell height jumps to 1.3m and period to 7.5s. The swell direction is well‑distributed across optimal angles: W (12.0%), WNW (10.8%), NW (11.5%), and SW (11.1%) all contribute. A good portion is in the 1-2m range, solid and pumping. The wind scenario is challenging: SE (12.0%) SSE (10.7%) are the most common directions, offering offshore flow. But westerly winds (W, WNW, NW) still blow around 15% of the time, creating bumpy conditions. Ideal wind percentage is 10%. October is a month of opportunity – the Atlantic storms are becoming frequent, but you need to pick your windows when the low passes and high pressure slides in from the east. Those windows can produce long period groundswell and clean, lined‑up waves.
