Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Hemisphere winter roars to life across the Western Cape, and Hermanus feels the full force of the Roaring Forties. During these months, the average swell height pushes up to 2.8m with periods averaging 12.4s, delivering consistent, powerful groundswell from the S/SSE quadrant that directly hits the beach's SSE-facing orientation. The key is the wind: offshore flow from the NW and WNW dominates (up to 38% of the time in June), creating clean, glassy faces on the sets that wrap into Walker Bay. This is when the spot truly fires – long-period SW swells refract and bend, but it's the more direct S/SSE pulses that offer the most predictable, rippable waves.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The transitional months see a drop in both swell size and offshore wind frequency, but they still offer plenty of opportunities. Average swell heights remain around 2.3-2.5m with periods of 11.6-12.0s. The wind is ideal roughly 18-26% of the time, mostly from the NW and W. The primary swell direction shifts more towards the SW, which requires careful reading of the bathymetry – the S/SSE swells become less frequent, but when the wind aligns, the waves still hold good shape. These months are a solid backup, especially for those who can work around the afternoon sea breezes.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer in the Cape is a trade-off: smaller, more inconsistent swell (averaging 2.1-2.2m, periods 11.1-11.3s) meets prevailing onshore ESE/SE winds that plague the spot. Ideal offshore wind drops to a mere 12-14% of the time, and the wind is mostly from the E and ESE (up to 40% combined), which directly ruins wave faces. The swell energy tilts heavily toward the SW and SSW (over 40% combined), directions that struggle to produce quality at this SSE-facing beach. While occasional long-period pulses from the S can sneak through, the window is narrow and usually blown out. For the dedicated surfer, early mornings or winter cold fronts are the only saviours.

August: The Wind Shifts Slightly

August sees the first subtle signs of winter's end. Swell remains at 2.8m with a period of 12.3s, but ideal wind drops to 32%. The NW (16.6%) and WNW (15.2%) still provide ample offshore opportunities, though the wind mixes more with W and WSW components. Swell direction sees SW at 18.2%, but the SSW (9.2%) and S+SSE (5.6%) gain relative importance. Long-period S swell becomes more common, and with the right NW wind, the quality of the waves at Hermanus can still be world-class. Expect plenty of solid, pumping days, but the frequency of glassy conditions starts to taper.
