Best Surf Season (October to April)

The prime window runs from October through April, with October, November, March and April standing out as the months that consistently deliver both favorable swell direction and manageable winds. During this period, the Aleutian Low and winter storms in the Sea of Japan generate frequent S to SW swells that perfectly align with Hokkaido's SSW-facing coastline. The average period during these months ranges from 7.4 to 8.2 seconds, indicating quality, rideable waves. Offshore winds from the north and northwest occur with enough frequency to groom these swells into clean, powerful lines. March, in particular, offers the best combination of optimal swell direction (over 40%) and a solid period, while October and November provide the first big pulses of the winter season. This is the time to plan a trip, expecting fun to solid waves in the waist-to-head-high range under often blue skies with offshore breezes.

Fair Surf Season (December to February and May)

December, January, February and May can produce decent waves but come with caveats. Winter months (Dec-Feb) have a high percentage of swell coming from less favorable west directions, and the wind is frequently onshore or cross-shore from the west and northwest, reducing the quality. However, these months also see the largest swell events, and when the direction aligns and an offshore wind sets in, the surf can be firing. The average period is shorter, often under 7 seconds, so waves tend to be punchier but less organized. May sees a drop in optimal swell direction, with SSE windswell beginning to dominate, but still offers occasional good days when a S swell coincides with northwest winds. These months are for the patient surfer willing to chase infrequent windows.

Low Surf Season (June to September)

June through September represents the low season for surf at this spot. The summer monsoon and typhoon tracks send the vast majority of swell from the SE and SSE, directly onshore for the SSW-facing beaches. This results in small, weak, choppy waves that are rarely surfable. The wind is dominated by strong southerly flows, making clean conditions a rare commodity. Although September has the highest percentage of offshore winds (19%) and August sees an increase in period, the swell direction remains overwhelmingly unfavorable. Surfing is possible on a longboard or foil when the wind cooperates, but overall, this is a period of minimal wave activity and poor quality. It is best reserved for exploring other activities or traveling to more exposed coastlines.

February: A Slight Shift

February remains in the grip of winter. The Sea of Japan continues to pump out short period windswell from the west and northwest. The average swell height holds at 0.7m, with a slightly improved period of 6.9s. The ratio of swell from the goldilocks S to SW directions increases marginally, offering more frequent opportunities for waves to wrap into the spot with some shape (27.6% from S, SSW, SW). However, the dominant swell directions still come from WSW and W, which are less favorable. The wind pattern shows a slight uptick in NNW and N winds, raising the ideal wind window to 12%. This means more sessions with clean, offshore conditions. Still, the majority of the time, onshore or cross-shore winds from the west ruin the surface. Look for windows between cold fronts when a high-pressure ridge delivers N winds and a touch of SW swell – that is when Hokkaido's breaks can offer punchy, rideable waves in the waist to chest high range.
