Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months deliver the most consistent and powerful surf at Hondarribia. The North Atlantic storm track fires up, sending frequent low-pressure systems across the Bay of Biscay. Average swell heights hover around 1.8-2.1m with long-period energy (10-14s) from the NW and WNW quadrants – ideal for this NE-facing beach. Offshore winds from the SSW to WSW blow clean and frequent, keeping the waves shaped and hollow. Expect pumping, firing conditions with occasional XL days when the fetch aligns perfectly.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These shoulder months offer a transition from winter power to summer lulls. Swell heights drop to the 1.3-1.5m range, and periods shorten to 10-11s. NW swell still dominates, but wind patterns become more variable. Spring and autumn low-pressure systems still produce rideable waves, and the chance of a long-period pulse remains. Wind ideal percentages hold near 31-33%, making for fun, rippable sessions when the timing is right.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic drop in both swell size and period. Average heights fall to 1.0-1.2m and periods shrink below 10s, resulting in weak, groveling surf for most of the season. The predominant NW swell becomes more windswell-like, and onshore northerly breezes (NNE, NE) frequently spoil the shape. While offshore wind percentages actually peak in May-June (37%), the lack of proper swell means only small, fun-sized waves on the best days. This is a time for longboarders and beginners, or for chasing the rare south-westerly swell window.

November: Full-On Winter Ahead

November delivers consistent winter-style surf. Average height climbs to 1.9m and period to 11.8s. NW swell (32.2%) and WNW (26.5%) continue to dominate. Ideal wind percentage is 30%, with strong southerly (S 12.2%, SSW 7.6%) and westerly (W 10.5%) flows – these are the best offshore directions for the spot. Low-pressure systems march across the North Atlantic, sending powerful swells into the Bay of Biscay. Expect pumping waves in the 1.5-2.5m range, with occasional XL days. The wind can be a challenge, but when it aligns, the surf is firing.
