Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic winter brings consistent, powerful swell to Hovden's west-facing beaches. Average wave heights hover between 1.4m and 1.7m with periods often exceeding 9 seconds, delivering the long-period groundswell that this coastline needs to light up. The dominant swell directions swing through the optimal SW to NW window, though the biggest challenge is the wind. Cyclonic activity along the polar front keeps the region stormy, and onshore winds from the same quadrants as the swell are common. However, when a ridge of high pressure builds in from Scandinavia, a crisp easterly flow sets up offshore conditions that transform Hovden into a cold-water gem. The months of November through March offer the best chance for pumping, firing surf, especially when the NAO index dips negative, allowing high pressure to settle over the North Sea.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

As the seasons transition, the surf becomes more variable. April sees a drop in average swell size to around 1.1m and period to 8.3s, but the wind ideal percentage peaks at 19% – the highest all year. This means cleaner conditions when the swell does arrive. October is the reverse: swells start ramping up again to 1.3m with 8.0s periods, and the chance for offshore winds improves to 15%. These shoulder months are a gamble, but when a well-timed low pressure system brushes the Norwegian coast without blowing itself out, the results can be unexpected gems with light winds and lined-up sets.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer brings the frustrating combination of small swell and predominantly onshore flow. From May through September, average wave heights linger below 1m, and periods rarely exceed 7.5 seconds, resulting in weak, choppy, groveling conditions. The dominant wind directions shift to southerly and south-southeasterly, which are cross-onshore to onshore for Hovden, ruining wave shape. The best months within this low season are perhaps May and September, where the tail end of spring and start of autumn can occasionally bring a pulse of longer-period swell. But for the most part, summer is a time for low expectations – save the energy for the cooler months.

October: Swell Returns, Wind Remains Tricky

October sees a significant ramp-up in swell activity, with an average height of 1.3m and period of 8.0s. The dominant swell directions are WSW (14.6%), W (13.1%), and SSW (12.9%) – all within the optimal window for Hovden. Wave heights in the 1-2m range become common, offering solid, rippable surf. However, the wind direction is still problematic. Southerly winds (S 14.0%, SSE 10.2%) blow onshore a large portion of the time, while the ideal offshore easterlies account for only 15%. The month is characterized by stormy periods with strong SW winds and building swell, followed by cleaner windows when high pressure builds from the east. When the stars align, October can deliver epic long-period swell with glassy conditions – a true taste of the winter to come.
