Best Surf Season (December - March)

During these months, Hyatt Reef comes alive as the winter monsoon shifts to deliver consistent offshore winds from the west and northwest. The Indian Ocean's Southern Swell machine is still churning, but the big story is the wind. With the Siberian high-pressure system influencing the region, we see a dominance of dry, offshore flow that grooms the long-period SW groundswell into clean, peeling lines. Average wave heights hover around 1.6-1.7m but the quality is top-tier – think fun, rippable waves with occasional pumping 1.5-2.5m sets when a stronger storm track aligns. The period averages 12-13s, providing plenty of punch.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These shoulder months see the winds transitioning. April still picks up solid SSW swell – the dominant direction – but the trades begin to build from the southeast, reducing ideal wind frequencies to around 19%. November is the reverse: the trades are fading, and westerly winds are slowly returning, with 29% ideal conditions. The swell remains consistent and powerful, so if you can catch a window with lighter winds, the rewards are there. It's a game of patience and reading the synoptic charts.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

The southeast trades become relentless from May through October, slamming the beach with onshore winds that turn the otherwise perfect SSW swell into choppy, messy surf. Despite larger average heights (2.0-2.2m) and longer periods (14s+), the quality is severely compromised. The winds blow predominantly from the ESE and SE at speeds often exceeding 20kph, creating bumpy conditions. Occasional westerly wind shifts can occur during tropical systems or frontal passages, but these are rare. For surfers who can handle onshore waves, there are still powerful waves to be had, especially at lower tide, but this is by far the most challenging time of year at Hyatt Reef.

April: Swell on a String, Wind a Gamble

April sees the trades really taking hold. Ideal wind plummets to just 19%, with ESE (32.8%) and E (19.1%) winds dominating at speeds mostly 10-20kph – onshore and choppy. Yet the swell is pumping: the average is 1.7m with a 13.8s period, and a staggering 83% comes from the SSW direction – directly into the spot but with a side-onshore wind. Wave heights are solid: 1-2m range prevails, with 1.5-2m accounting for 31.7% of the swell. If you score a morning glass-off or a brief westerly shift, you'll find powerful, hollow waves. But most of the time, it's a battle with bumpy conditions.
