Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic storm track delivers the goods to Il Castello during these months. With average swell heights climbing to 0.9–1.0 m and periods hovering around 5 s, the predominant SW and WSW swells align perfectly with the beach's SSW exposure. The real key, however, is the frequent offshore winds from the N, NNE, NE, and ENE quadrants—blowing clean and strong over 20% of the time in peak months. This combination creates punchy, rideable waves that can easily push into the 1.5–2 m range on bigger days. Long period groundswells from distant lows occasionally sneak in, transforming the lineup into a more powerful, long-period experience. It's when the Mediterranean winter roars to life.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the seasons transition, the Atlantic energy wanes and the Tyrrhenian Sea becomes more fickle. April and May still see a decent share of S, SSW, and SW swells, but average heights drop to 0.6–0.7 m and periods shorten to 4.5–5.0 s. The offshore wind window narrows significantly, with ideal wind percentages falling to 12–17%. Onshore breezes from the S and SW dominate more often, chopping up what swell does arrive. September marks a slow reawakening: the first autumn lows begin to ripple through, lifting swell heights back to 0.6 m and boosting the chance of cleaner conditions, but it remains a transitional month—waiting for the real juice to return.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is a flat spell for Il Castello. Average swell heights bottom out at a meager 0.5 m and periods barely touch 4.0 s, producing mostly weak, short-period chop. The swell spectrum is dominated by windswell from the WSW and SW, but with only 8–9% of the time offering favorable offshore winds, the window for quality waves is tiny. Persistent onshore flow from the W, WNW, and SW layers on a messy, groveling texture—fine for a longboard or a swim, but not for a proper surf session. Occasional southerly pulses can lift the energy, but they are rare and often accompany the same onshore winds that ruin them. Save your quiver for winter.

April: Fickle but Fair

April sees the Atlantic engine start to stall, yet Il Castello clings to a decent swell window. Average height drops to 0.7 m, period to 5.0 s, and ideal wind only 17% of the month. Swell direction is heavily tilted toward S (16.0%) and SSE (14.8%), with WSW (14.2%) and SW (13.3%) still in play. The S/SSE swells are marginal for this SSW-facing beach—they wrap in with less focus and often accompany onshore winds from the same quadrant. The real gems come from the WSW and SW quadrants when a late-season Atlantic low passes north of the Ligurian Sea. Offshore winds from NNE and NE (total 15.3%) can groom these into clean, fun waves in the 0.5–1.5 m range, but you'll need to pick your days carefully as the weather patterns become more unstable.
