Best Surf Season (October - March)

This is prime time for powerful groundswells generated by deep extratropical cyclones tracking across the Atlantic. However, the dominant swell directions are from the W-WNW (over 50% combined), which require significant refraction to wrap into this SSW-facing beach. The real magic happens when a low-pressure system tracks just south of Ireland, delivering a clean SW or SSW swell with offshore N-NW winds. Unfortunately, the prevailing wind during this period is from the S-SW quadrant (30-40% of the time), meaning many days are blown out. Still, the frequency of swells is high, and the average wave period of 12+ seconds ensures plenty of power when conditions align. The ideal wind blows from N, NNE, NE, or NNW, and we see this about 20-26% of the time, offering windows of excellence.
Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)
As the winter storm track relaxes, average swell heights drop to 1.0-1.2m and periods shorten to 9-11 seconds. The swell direction spectrum shifts slightly northward, with WNW and NW becoming more dominant. This means less direct swell exposure for Inch Reef, and waves become smaller and more inconsistent. However, the trade-off is an improvement in wind conditions. Ideal offshore wind frequencies rise to 27-35%, as the Azores High begins to build and north-northeasterly breezes become more common. These are the months for longboard fun and smaller days, but the occasional late-season low can deliver a sneaky 2m swell with perfect offshore winds. In April and May, the water warms up, and spring sunshine adds to the appeal.
Low Surf Season (June - August)
Summer brings the quietest surf of the year. Average swell heights bottom out at 0.9-1.0m, and periods often sit in the 8-9 second range, producing weak, short-period windswell. The dominant swell directions are from the W and WNW, which again offer minimal direct size for the SSW-facing lineup during these smaller swells. The increased frequency of NW wind tends to produce onshore or side-shore conditions for much of the day. Although the ideal wind percentage holds at 28-33%, the lack of significant swell means that most days will be small or groveling. Occasional summer storms spinning off the Gulf Stream can inject some fun, 1-1.5m waves with clean N winds, but these are fleeting. For most surfers, this is the time for travel or alternative activities.
