Best Surf Season (May - June)

As the monsoon transitions, the Indian Ocean roars to life. During these months, the average swell height climbs to a solid 1.7-1.8m and periods elongate to 14+ seconds, delivering powerful, long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW. More importantly, the wind regime becomes increasingly favorable, with offshore breezes from the north and northeast blowing up to 50% of the time in May. This combination of pumping swell and clean offshore winds creates the most pristine surf conditions of the year at Inside Lefts. The waves are often in the 1.5-2.5m range, firing with plenty of punch and shape.

Fair Surf Season (January - April & July - September)

Outside the peak months, the surf remains highly rideable but with compromises. From January through April, the swell is consistently 1.5m with moderate to long periods (12-14s), but the wind is less reliable with onshore westerlies often spoiling the fun. Still, when the north wind sets in, the setup can be excellent. From July to September, the swell reaches its annual peak – averaging 2.0-2.1m with very long periods (14s+) – but the southeast trades dominate, bringing strong side/onshore winds that make conditions challenging. The wave quality is often stormy and lumpy, though the size is impressive. Surfers willing to battle the wind can find heavy, powerful waves.

Low Surf Season (October - December)

As the dry season gives way to the wet season, the swell energy starts to drop off and the wind becomes predominantly unfavorable. October sees the last gasp of big swells (1.8m) but with only 10% ideal wind. November and December see swell heights drop back to 1.5m with shorter periods around 12-13s, and the wind is rarely offshore – often blowing from the west or south. This is the time for small wave boards and patience, though occasional clean windows can still produce fun sessions.

January: The Monsoon Onslaught

The northwest monsoon is in full swing, delivering a consistent supply of SSW swell (37.5%) mixed with SW (27.5%) and WSW (21%) directions – all optimal for Inside Lefts. Average wave heights sit at 1.5m with an average period of 12.1s, producing solid, punchy waves that are rideable and fun. The wind, however, is often from the west and west-northwest (WNW 26.4%, W 19.9%), creating onshore or cross-shore conditions. Offshore flow from the north and northeast accounts for about 15% of the time, contributing to the 23% ideal wind score. When the north wind sets in, the waves clean up nicely, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully.
