Best Surf Season (May - September)

The southwest monsoon takes full command over the Maldives from late May through September, bringing a dramatic shift in both wind and swell patterns. While the dominant swell originates from the south and southwest — not the ideal north quadrant for Isdhoo's north-facing orientation — the wind regime becomes the saving grace. Persistent winds from the west, southwest, and south blow offshore or side-offshore at Isdhoo, grooming the south swell into clean, workable waves. Average heights hover in the 1.0 - 1.3 m range with average periods around 7 seconds, providing a consistent 'fun-sized' to 'solid' wave. The wind is ideal over 50% of the time in June, July, and August, making this the most reliable window for surfable conditions, despite the less-than-optimal swell direction. This is when the spot truly comes alive, with long-period pulses occasionally boosting quality.

Fair Surf Season (April & October)

April and October represent the transition between the northeast and southwest monsoons. The wind field becomes more variable, and the percentage of ideal wind drops to around 40% in April and 32% in October. Swell direction shifts from east to south in April and back from south to east in October. The mixing of swells — with contributions from both the Indian Ocean basin and local windswell — can create periods of fun, rippable waves when the wind cooperates. However, consistency is lower, and days with onshore or cross-shore winds are more common. These months are worth monitoring, but not reliable for a surf trip.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

From November through March, the northeast monsoon sets in, dominating the region with strong, persistent winds from the northeast and east-northeast. For a north-facing spot like Isdhoo, these winds are directly onshore, destroying wave quality and making most days unsurfable. Wind is ideal less than 14% of the time from December to February, and only 5% in January and February. Swell during this period is almost entirely from the east and southeast — a direction that wraps around poorly, if at all, to the north side. The average wave heights are still around 1.0 m, but with short periods (6-6.5 s) and choppy, messy faces, it is mostly a write-off. A few north swell pulses can sneak through, but they are extremely rare. This is the low season for surf at Isdhoo.

June: Southwest Monsoon Firing

June is the prime month for surf at Isdhoo. Wind conditions are excellent: ideal wind reaches 53%, with strong contributions from SW (18%), WSW (27%), and W (20%) at speeds that keep the faces clean. Swell is dominated by S (33%) and SSE (20%) and SSW (26%), with the majority in the 1-1.5m range (28.8% from S, 21.3% from SSW) and a good chunk at 1.5-2m (3.0% from S, 3.7% from SSW). Average height is 1.3 m and period 7.0 s. The combination of consistent southerly swell and near-constant offshore winds means you can expect punchy, rideable waves almost daily. While the swell direction is not optimal, the wind regime overcomes this, making June the most reliable month for a surf trip to Isdhoo.
