Best Surf Season (September - November)

The late wet season brings the most consistent pulse of SSW swell to Isla Chepillo’s southwest-facing shores. As deep Southern Ocean lows strengthen during the austral spring, long-period energy travels northward and finally wraps into the Gulf of Panama. While average wave heights remain modest, this window sees the highest proportion of 0.5–1.5m waves (up to 27% in October) and occasional shoulder-high sets. The trade wind regime weakens, allowing lighter offshore flows from the N–NE quadrant on some days, but onshore S–SW winds also increase—leading to a mix of clean and bumpy conditions. Patience and a keen eye on the forecast are key; when the right alignment of a robust SSW swell and a light northerly breeze occurs, the waves can actually turn on.

Fair Surf Season (December - February)

During the heart of the dry season, the North Atlantic and Caribbean high-pressure systems intensify, driving strong and persistent offshore winds from the N and NNE directions. These winds blow straight offshore, grooming what little swell does arrive, but they also limit wave heights by suppressing local sea generation. Swell periods are the longest of the year (9–11s), but wave heights average only 0.3m, with the rare 0.5m+ set. The result is often a glassy, micro-wave regime perfect for a longboard or practice on a foamie, but rarely offering any real punch. Tiny but clean sums up the vibe.

Low Surf Season (March - August)

From early spring through summer, the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts northward, weakening the offshore trade winds and introducing a more pronounced onshore flow from the S–SW quadrant. Swell direction remains locked in from the SSW, but wave heights stay tiny—mostly under 0.5m—and the average period drops below 10s, often below 9s. The combination of short-period, weak swell and increasing onshore wind creates generally messy, choppy conditions. Occasional pulses of 0.5–1m groundswell can appear in May and August, but they are brief and often spoiled by the prevailing S–SW breeze. For most surfers, this is a good time to explore Panama’s more exposed coastlines.

May: First Real Swell Pulses, Onshore Winds Creep In

May brings a notable increase in SSW swell energy, with 96.4% of all waves coming from that direction. For the first time, the 0.5–1m height bin jumps to 12.1%, and there is even a tiny 0.1% of 1–1.5m waves. The average wave height ticks up to 0.4m, and the period remains solid at 11.0s. However, the wind picture becomes more complicated. Strong offshore flows from N and NNE drop to just 24.6% combined, while onshore winds from S, SSW, SW, and WSW account for 26.5% of observations. This creates a split personality: early mornings often feature light N breezes, but by midday the S–SW onshore flow builds, turning the surf bumpy. The ideal surfing wind occurs only 2% of the time. May offers the best chance of the year so far for a fun, shoulder-high wave, but you have to work the tide and the wind window.
