Best Surf Season (April - August)

As winter settles in over the South Atlantic, Itapiruba awakens. The months from April through August deliver a consistent pulse of south quadrant swell—particularly from S and SSE—that wraps beautifully into the southeast-facing beach. The average wave height climbs to 1.7m and the period stretches to 9-10s, giving you that punchy, powerful ride. More importantly, the offshore wind window from the NW quadrants (W, WNW, NW, NNW) opens up, with ideal wind percentages topping 60% in June. This is when the stars align: long-period groundswell meeting glassy conditions. It's the time to score clean, rippable walls and the occasional pumping set.

Fair Surf Season (March & September)

These shoulder months are a mixed bag. March still holds onto late-summer east-southeast swell energy but with a slightly longer period and improving wind odds (44% ideal). September sees a peak in average swell height at 1.9m, but the wind turns fickle—ideal wind drops to 37% with strong northeasterly trades often spoiling the surface. You'll get plenty of size, but the wind can chop up what would otherwise be a good session. Pick your windows carefully when the NW wind kicks in.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

Spring and summer bring warm air but frustrating surf. From October to February, the dominant swell shifts to the E, ENE, and ESE quadrants—not the optimal directions for this southeast-facing spot. These east swells are often short-period (8-8.5s) and accompanied by brisk onshore or cross-shore winds from the NE and E, with ideal wind percentages languishing in the low-to-mid 30s. The average height hovers around 1.4-1.5m, too often producing weak, choppy, and grovelly conditions. Sure, you can get a fun-sized wave on the right day, but expect more mush than magic.

November: Windy and Weak

November is similar to October but slightly worse. Average swell 1.6m, period 8.7s. The swell is mostly from the east (E 17.4%, ENE 17.1%, ESE 16.6%). South swell contribution is minimal (S 8.7%, SSE 12.9%). Wind ideal percentage bottoms out at 33%. Strong NE trades blow over 40% of the time (NNE 22.4%, NE 19.6%), often exceeding 20kph. Offshore NW winds are rare (under 5%). It's a challenging month for surfers: small, messy waves with bumpy surfaces. The few south swells that sneak through get ruined by onshore wind. Unless you're desperate to wet the board, November is one to skip.
