Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter and early spring months deliver Jacksonville Beach its most consistent surf, driven by the intensification of the North Atlantic storm track. As cold fronts sweep off the continent, they generate a healthy mix of NE, ENE, E, and ESE swell that lines up well with the beach's ENE orientation. While average wave heights hover around 0.6m, the average period climbs above 7s, providing punchy, rideable waves. Crucially, these frontal passages frequently bring offshore winds out of the SW, WSW, W, and WNW, cleaning up the faces. This combination yields ideal conditions 13-17% of the time — the best window of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The transition months see a noticeable drop in consistency. April sees the tail end of winter swell, but the average wave period drops to 6.5s and the wind patterns become more fickle, with ideal surf wind only 11% of the time. September, on the other hand, is the wild card — the tropical cyclone season fires up, and while the local wind patterns remain challenging (only 6% ideal), the potential for powerful, long-period groundswell from passing hurricanes and tropical storms can deliver shoulder-high to overhead waves. These are rare but memorable days when everything aligns.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are the doldrums for Jacksonville Beach. The dominant Bermuda High sets up a persistent southeasterly wind flow that is generally onshore for the ENE-facing beach. Swell becomes scarce, with average heights dropping to 0.4m and average periods slumping to 6-6.5s. Over 85% of the incoming waves are under 0.5m, resulting in mostly micro surf. When a rare tropical swell does sneak in from the south, it often arrives with unfavorable wind. The only saving grace are occasional afternoon sea breeze pulses that can offer a brief clean-up, but overall, this is the low season for surf.

December: Winter Kicks in with Solid Surf

December closes the year with the highest percentage of ideal conditions at 17%. Average swell height is 0.6m with a period of 7.1s. Swell is well-distributed from NE (15.8%), ENE (16.1%), E (18.4%), and ESE (14.0%). The chance of 1-1.5m waves from NE (2.0%) and ENE (1.1%) keeps the surf interesting. The wind patterns are favorable, with strong components from NW (8.0%), WNW (7.7%), and N (8.6%). The combination of cold fronts and strong high pressure systems often produces crisp, offshore mornings with long, clean lines. While the average wave height isn't huge, the consistency of both swell and offshore wind makes December a reliable month for logging fun sessions at Jacksonville Beach.
