Best Surf Season (June - August)

Winter roars to life along the Surf Coast as the Southern Ocean fires up with powerful low-pressure systems. Jan Juc sees a peak in average swell height (1.7m) and period (12+ seconds), delivering consistent, powerful groundswells from the SW and SSW. Combined with the highest percentage of offshore winds from the north and northwest (over 50% ideal), this is prime time for clean, pumping waves. The cold fronts bring crisp conditions and a reliable rhythm of swell pulses.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - October)

Shoulder seasons offer a mix of lingering summer patterns and building winter energy. April and May see a transition to more consistent SW swell with periods reaching into the 12-second range, while offshore wind odds improve to 39-49%. September and October start to taper off winter's intensity but still deliver solid swell with manageable winds. These months often produce the best combination of wave quality and lighter crowds.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

Summer and early autumn are the quietest months at Jan Juc. The subtropical ridge dominates, bringing frequent onshore winds from the SE and SSE that chop up the waves. Swell direction shifts to more SW but with shorter periods (around 11 seconds) and smaller heights (1.5m average). While there are occasional pulses from Southern Ocean storms, the wind is often unfavorable, with ideal wind percentages dropping to 20-27%. This is a time for groveling on smaller days or waiting for a rare offshore window.

August: Late Winter Power, Swell Windows

August maintains winter strength with an average swell of 1.7m and a period of 12.5s – the longest of the year. SW swell (37%) leads, followed by WSW (18%) and SSW (9.5%). Offshore wind frequency is still high at 49%, with WNW and NW winds predominant. Onshore winds are at a minimum. The waves are powerful and often in the 1.5-2.5m range, offering both heavy barrels and steep faces. As spring approaches, there is a slight increase in variability, but overall quality remains top-tier.
