The transitional months of autumn and spring offer a tantalizing mix. Swell heights remain robust (2.5m - 2.8m) and periods long (11-12s), but the consistency of both swell and ideal offshore wind takes a slight dip. During these shoulder months, powerful SW groundswells still arrive, but they battle more frequent spells of onshore E to NE winds—bad news for J-Bay, as these ruin the wave quality. However, when a high-pressure system sits south of the continent, it pumps in clean WSW-W flow. Those are the days to call in sick: sunny skies, light offshore breezes, and long, powerful lines reeling down the point. A solid second-tier season for those willing to gamble on wind.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
The summer months are the quietest time for Lee-uh-roy Jenkins at J-Bay. The main storm tracks shift southwards, weakening their influence, and the average swell height drops to around 2.4-2.5m with periods hovering just above 10s. While the swell is still rideable (solidly in the 1-2m range), the dominant wind pattern turns problematic. The thermal low over the interior often kicks up onshore E to NE winds, which blow directly into the bay and chop up the faces. The percentage of ideal surfing wind drops to the low-to-mid 30s. You can still score fun, rippable waves on the better days, especially when a rare SW groundswell lines up with a coastal southwesterly, but overall it’s a waiting game. Summer is for chasing smaller, groveling waves elsewhere; here, it is strictly the off-season.
