Best Surf Season (November - February)

The heart of the northeast monsoon drives the most consistent swell of the year at Jelly's Point. Average wave heights range from 1.0m to 1.3m with periods averaging 9.2 to 9.9 seconds, delivering a mix of fun, rippable waves and occasional pumping sets in the 1.5-2m range. While the dominant swell directions remain ENE and NE – not ideal for this north-facing beach – a noticeable uptick in NNE and even N/NNW components (especially in Dec and Jan) brings the best potential for waves wrapping in. The trade-off is wind: offshore flow from the south occurs only 18-28% of the time, so light mornings and afternoon sea breezes are the rule. When a strong high-pressure system sits to the south, we get clean, long-period swell under sunny skies – those are the windows to score.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

These transitional months offer smaller but cleaner conditions. Swell heights drop to 0.7-1.0m on average, with periods still around 9-10 seconds, yielding fun-sized, groveling waves. The wind is ideal for surfing 27-39% of the time, with a higher chance of lighter southerly breezes creating glassy faces. However, the swell direction remains stubbornly ENE/NE, so waves are often crumbly and lack the open face you'd get from a true N/NW pulse. Late March and early April can see occasional N/NNE pulses from lingering winter storms, providing a brief upgrade to solid, rippable conditions.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings the weakest surf of the year at Jelly's Point. Average swell heights plummet to 0.5-0.7m and periods linger in the 8.6-9.0s range, resulting in small, micro conditions that require a longboard or a groveler. While the percentage of offshore wind climbs to 36-59% (especially in May and June), the swell simply lacks power. Swell directions are dominated by E and ENE, which barely refract into a north-facing beach – often producing nothing but choppy, low lines. Occasional tropical disturbances in the Pacific can send a long-period pulse from the N or NNE, but these are rare. This is the season for flat spells and waiting for the next monsoon shift.

October: Building Swell, More North Energy

October sees a sharp rise in average swell height to 0.7m and the highest average period of the year at 10.2s. The swell direction becomes more favourable: NE (43.6%), NNE (13.9%), N (3.7%), and NNW (4.8%) combine for a solid north component. Wind conditions are ideal 39% of the time, with southerly and southwesterly breezes (S 8.6%, SSW 5.2%, SW 3.5%) providing offshore flow. The long period allows deep-water swell to wrap efficiently into the bay, delivering powerful, clean waves when the wind cooperates. Expect frequent fun to solid days in the 1-1.5m range, with the occasional 1.5-2m pulse from a distant storm. October is the start of the prime season for Jelly's Point.
