Best Surf Season (October - March)

As the North Atlantic storm track shifts southward through autumn and winter, Juist receives the most consistent and powerful swell of the year from October through March. Average wave heights hover around 1.0-1.3m with periods reaching 6 seconds, offering rideable waves that can occasionally pump when a deep low pressure system aligns with the island's north-facing beaches. The dominant swell directions during this period include west-northwest through north, with the optimal N, NNE, NW, and NNW quadrants accounting for a significant share of the energy. However, the Achilles heel remains the wind: offshore conditions (from SE-SSW) occur only about 6-8% of the time, while strong onshore winds from the west and northwest often accompany the best swell. Still, cold fronts sweeping across the North Sea can briefly deliver clean conditions with light southerlies, making these months the prime window for surf on Juist, especially when a negative NAO phase stalls high pressure over Scandinavia.

Fair Surf Season (September)

September marks a transition as summer's Azores High weakens and the first autumn gales begin to form. Average swell height climbs back to 1.0m with periods of 5.6s, and the swell direction shifts more towards the northwest and north. Wind patterns show an uptick in ideal offshore flow (SE-SSW) around 7%, but still limited. This month offers a slight improvement over summer with more consistent groundswell, though it remains a gamble between small, clean days and blown-out conditions.

Low Surf Season (April - August)

From April through August, Juist experiences the smallest and weakest surf of the year. Average swell heights drop to 0.8m and periods hover around 5.2-5.5s, resulting in mostly short-period, choppy windswell that rarely breaks cleanly. The dominant swell directions remain northwesterly, but the energy is limited. Offshore wind percentages stay pitifully low at 6%, and the prevailing westerly and northwesterly winds produce constant onshore conditions. The occasional summer thunderstorm or passing low can offer a brief window of clean southerly wind and a small north pulse, but overall, this is a time best spent exploring other activities or enjoying flat, glassy mornings if you have a longboard.

December: Winter's Full Force

December brings the winter peak with average swell height of 1.2m and period 6.0s, matching January in power. Swell direction is dominated by north-northwest (15.1%) and northwest (10.8%), with a strong westerly component (west 11.3%, WSW 10.5%). The average period of 6.0s still indicates short-period windswell, but deep lows can spin up long-period swells that hit 10-14s on rare occasions. Wind conditions are similar to November: offshore flow from the south (7.4%), south-southwest (12.0%), and southwest (12.8%) accounts for a significant share, but strong westerly winds (west 7.6%, WNW 6.2%) are ever-present. The best surfing happens when a deep depression near Iceland pushes a powerful north-northwest swell towards the German Bight and a trailing cold front brings light southerly winds. On such days, the island can see pumping, heavy waves in the 1.5-2.5m range – a true taste of North Sea power.
