Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter machinery kicks into high gear from October through March at Karmay, delivering the most consistent and powerful surf of the year. Average swell heights range from 2.0m to 2.5m with periods averaging 8.6 to 9.6 seconds – solid, punchy, and often with enough grunt for the region's more exposed breaks. The dominant swell directions during this period are from the NW and WNW, which wrap into the southwest-facing beach, though the true golden ticket is a west-to-southwest groundswell generated by strong extratropical cyclones tracking northeast of the British Isles. Offshore winds are most reliable from the north and northeast, occurring 22-25% of the time. When the synoptic setup aligns – a high-pressure ridge over Scandinavia coupled with a deep low west of Ireland – Karmay can see long-period SW swell with crisp, offshore N-NE breeze, producing clean, lined-up waves. However, the window for perfection is narrow; onshore S-SE winds dominate much of the winter, especially during storm passages. Surfers must pick their moments carefully, but when it fires, this is the prime time for serious sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

Shoulder months offer a mix of small-to-moderate swell and more frequent clean conditions, though consistency drops. April sees a decline in average swell height to 1.4m and period to 8.8s, with NW swell still prevalent but increasingly mixed with W and SW energy. The percentage of ideal wind rises to 28% as spring brings more frequent high pressure over the Norwegian Sea. May continues the trend with smaller swell (1.2m, 7.7s) and a surge in NW-NNW swell from lingering winter lows, but winds turn more variable and often onshore. September marks the transition: swell heights begin climbing back toward 1.6m and periods to 8.0s, with a slight increase in SW-W swell frequency. While onshore S-SE winds remain common (23% ideal), early autumn can serve up pleasant, punchy waves on the smaller side – ideal for longboards or fun-sized boards.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer at Karmay is characterized by small, weak swell and persistent onshore wind patterns, making it the least consistent time for quality surf. Average swell heights hover around 1.1-1.2m with short periods of 6.7-7.1s – mostly windswell with minimal power. The swell window is dominated by NW and NNW directions, which require long periods to bend into the SW-facing beach, but periods are too short to produce good shape. Offshore wind conditions are at their yearly low, occurring only 20-22% of the time. The prevailing summer synoptic – low pressure over the Norwegian Sea and weak high pressure over the continent – funnels frequent SSE-WSW onshore flow. While the occasional small, clean wave might appear between fronts, most days are better suited for exploring the fjords than chasing surf. Expect flat spells and choppy conditions; only a surprise tropical remnant or an early-season low can provide a brief window of fun-sized waves.

October: Swell Rebuild Sets In

October sees a hearty jump in average swell height to 2.0m and a period of 8.6s, driven by intensifying extratropical storms. The swell rose begins to normalize: NW (9.6%) and WNW (8.5%) remain top, but W (8.2%), SW (7.6%), and SSW (7.6%) now combine for a strong optimal swell presence. Wave heights frequently hit the 1.5-2.5m range – pumping, heavy conditions when the angle is right. Ideal wind is 22%, similar to winter months, as offshore N (5.6%) and NNE (2.9%) become more common. However, the wind pattern is still dominated by onshore SSE (12.6%) and SE (11.2%), especially during storm approaches. The key to October is tracking the arrival of strong lows moving northeast; a well-placed high over Greenland can steer a NW crisp wind into a WSW swell, creating world-class waves at Karmay. As the month progresses, the frequency of these setups increases. October is a prime month for experienced surfers seeking heavy winter-style conditions.
