Best Surf Season (November - March)

As winter deepens across the Aegean, the northern fetch comes alive, delivering consistent north-northwest swell to Kolibithra. Average wave heights climb to 1.0-1.3m during these months, with periods averaging around 5 seconds. While this is short-period chop, the swell direction is ideal, straight into the north-facing beach. The challenge is the wind: the same northern storms that produce the swell also bring strong onshore winds from the N and NNW, ruining the surf quality the majority of the time. However, when a high-pressure system settles over the Balkans, light southerly winds (SSW-SW) can provide rare but glorious offshore conditions. These windows, though only 4-5% of the time, transform the messy swell into clean, punchy waves in the 1-2m range. February stands out as the peak month for both swell size and the occasional dream session.

Fair Surf Season (April and October)

Transition months April and October offer a mixed bag. Swell heights drop to 0.8m (April) and 1.0m (October) with short periods. The frequency of ideal offshore wind increases slightly in April (5% vs 2% in October), but the swell is smaller. October sees more north swell but also more north wind. These months are best for those willing to gamble on a small, clean day with a south wind, typically after the passage of a cold front or during a weak pressure gradient.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer settles in with a vengeance. The persistent Meltemi wind blows from the north at 20-40kph almost daily, creating choppy, onshore conditions that destroy wave quality. Swell is generated by these same winds, resulting in short-period, wind-swell from the N and NNW. Average heights hover around 0.7-0.9m with periods under 5 seconds. Ideal offshore wind is virtually nonexistent (1-2% of the time). This period is not recommended for surfing at Kolibithra. The rare exception is a weak southerly breeze early in the morning before the Meltemi kicks in, but the lack of swell energy makes it a groveling affair.

November: Building Winter Swell

November sees swell heights averaging 1.0m with period 5.0s. Swell comes primarily from N (22.5%) and NNE (15.3%), with significant SW (14.3%) which is not ideal. Wind is less northerly than summer: N (28.6%), NNE (13.3%), but also notable SSW (10.6%) and SW (8.0%). Ideal wind rises to 4%. The increased frequency of southerly winds, especially after cold fronts, means more chance of offshore conditions. When aligned, 1-2m north swell with southwest wind can produce clean, powerful surf - the best of the season.
