Best Surf Season (April - October)

The dry season ushers in a prolonged period of premium surf conditions along the west-facing shores of Kuta. The dominant Southeast trade winds blow consistently from the E to ESE quadrant, delivering the offshore flow that grooms the waves to perfection. Meanwhile, the Southern Ocean is cranking out powerful, long-period groundswells from the SW to SSW, which wrap beautifully into the bay. With average wave heights often in the 1.5-2.5m range and periods exceeding 14 seconds, this is when Kuta truly fires. The combination of clean, glassy mornings and pulsing SW swell makes every session a potential standout.

Fair Surf Season (March & November)

The transition months of March and November offer a mixed bag. Offshore winds are still common but less reliable, and the swell direction shifts slightly more southerly. March sees the tail end of the wet season with westerly wind influences still creeping in, while November marks the build-up to the monsoon, with increasing cloud and occasional onshore flow. However, when the stars align, you can still score solid, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range with enough period to make for a fun session.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The wet season dominates from December through February, bringing frequent westerly winds that blow directly onshore at Kuta. The monsoon trough and passing tropical lows generate a lot of W to WSW windswell, which gets chopped up by the same onshore flow that creates it. Surf quality takes a nosedive – waves are often messy, short-period, and blown out. While the average swell height remains around 1.6-1.7m, the lack of clean offshore wind keeps the surfsession potential low. Only the occasional break in the clouds offers a fleeting window of rideable waves.

July: Consistent and Heavy

July is the peak of the dry season and delivers consistently solid surf. The average swell height is 2.2m with a period of 14.4s – the highest of any month. Swell direction shifts even more southerly, with S (33.3%) and SSW (35.2%) dominating. This southerly direction is a bit off the ideal SW, but the power is undeniable. Over 21% of all waves are in the 2-2.5m range and a good portion exceed that. Offshore wind conditions are still favorable at 46% ideal, but the trades can be gusty, especially from the ESE and SE at 20-30 kph. The wave quality remains high in the mornings when the wind is lightest. July is a month for those who enjoy heavy, barreling waves on a consistent basis – just be aware that the swell direction may produce more closeouts at certain tides. This is prime barrel-hunting season.
