Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic feeds Kvassheim its most powerful swell from October through March. During these months, the average wave height hovers between 1.9 and 2.4 meters, with periods often reaching into the 8 to 9 second range – that's solid, punchy surf ready to unload on the southwest-facing beach. Extratropical storms churn the Norwegian Sea, sending long-period groundswell that wraps into the bay. While the wind statistics show only 17-20% ideal offshore conditions (from the north to east-northeast), the sheer size and consistency of the swell means that when a cold high pressure sits over Scandinavia, you can score clean, powerful waves with offshore northerlies grooming the faces. This is the prime window for big wave chargers, though you need to pick your days carefully – onshore southwesterlies are common and can ruin the party.

Fair Surf Season (April - May and September)

Spring and early autumn offer a mixed bag. April and May see the swell dropping to 1.1-1.4 meters on average, with periods shortening to 7-8 seconds. The trade-off is a higher chance of offshore winds – 23-25% of the time – thanks to more frequent high-pressure blocks. This creates smaller but fun, rippable waves that are perfect for longboards or performance shortboards on a good day. September sees a return of larger swells (1.6 meters) and periods (8 seconds) as autumn storms begin to stir, though the wind remains transitional with about 18% ideal conditions. You can get lucky with a north-easterly and overhead swell, but consistency is lower than winter.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest time at Kvassheim. From June through August, average wave heights barely exceed 1.1-1.2 meters and periods linger in the 6-7 second range – mostly weak, short-period windswell that seldom delivers powerful rides. The dominant wind shifts to the south and southwest (onshore) over 50% of the time, blowing out what little shape there is. While the percentage of ideal offshore wind is still around 18-19%, the lack of swell energy means you are often left with small, messy conditions. Only occasional pulses from distant lows can bring fun-sized waves, but consistency is low. This is the time for summer cruisers or waiting for the autumn transition.

December: Year-End Powerhouse

December brings the second highest average swell of the year at 2.2 meters and a period of 8.9 seconds. Swell from the optimal directions (S-SW-WSW) accounts for about 16% of the total, but the frequency of large, long-period waves from the Atlantic is at its peak. The wind regime is dominated by ESE and SE (21% combined) as well as NNW (9.3%), with an ideal offshore wind percentage of 19%. The holiday month can be a turbulent mix of massive storm surf and howling onshore winds, but it also produces the most consistent swell energy of the year. When the wind aligns – often in the wake of a low pressure system moving east – you can find epic, heavy conditions that demand your full attention. December is for the committed surfer who is willing to brave cold temperatures and fickle wind for the chance of a lifetime wave.
