Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the winter swell window delivers the most consistent and powerful surf at Lagoa de Albufeira. During these months, the North Atlantic storm track is fully active, generating frequent long-period WNW to NW groundswells that march right into this west-facing beach. Average wave heights sit between 1.7m and 2.0m with periods averaging 12 to 13 seconds, often producing pumping, firing conditions in the 1.5-2.5m range. The chance of offshore/easterly winds peaks between 22% and 31%, granting clean, glassy waves when the synoptic setup aligns. Cold fronts sweep through, but the trades shift favourably with passing highs, making this the go-to period for quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months act as a bridge between the active winter pattern and the sleepy summer regime. In April, average swell height drops to 1.5m with a still respectable 11.1s period, but the wind becomes more fickle with offshore only 15% of the time. September sees similar numbers – 1.1m and 10.5s – yet the early autumn storms begin to re‑energise the Atlantic. Swell directions remain predominantly NW‑WNW, and while the frequency of clean waves is lower, the windows of opportunity can deliver fun, rippable surf in the 1-1.5m range, especially when a high‑pressure ridge stalls over the Bay of Biscay and funnels light east winds across the coast.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are characterised by a dramatic drop in both swell energy and favourable wind. Average wave heights fall to 1.0-1.2m and periods shorten to 8.7-10.0s, resulting in predominantly small, grovelly surf. The wind clock is dominated by strong N‑NNW winds – onshore for Lagoa’s west‑facing orientation – blowing 17-40% of the time. Offshore east winds become rare, dropping to just 4-11% frequency. While occasional wind‑swell pulses from the NW can provide rideable waves, the overall consistency is poor. For the dedicated surfer, dawn patrol or late-evening sessions may yield clean 0.5-1m waves when a high‑pressure cell parks over the Iberian interior and lights up a land breeze. Otherwise, this is a season to explore other activities or nearby spots with more exposed breaks.

June: Summer Doldrums

June officially ushers in the low season. Average wave height is just 1.1m with a period of 9.4s – typical small, punchy summer conditions. The swell is dominated by NW (49.2%) and WNW (34.3%), but most of that energy is under 1m or in the 1-1.5m range. Offshore wind is a meager 6%, while NNW winds (31.5%) and N winds (17.3%) prevail, often blowing 20-30kph. These onshore winds destroy wave quality, making the surf messy and choppy. The period is in the 6-9s average zone, limiting wave shape. A glimmer of hope: occasional weak low‑pressure systems can drag in a fresh W‑NW swell, but onshore wind usually accompanies it. If you’re desperate, look for a high‑pressure cell that generates a light east wind, but such days are extremely uncommon.
